Since Martin played the entire game against UTEP -- SMU's fifth game in a 12-game season -- he would not be eligible for a sixth year.

I disagree. The rule says a player can not play in more than 20% of the games and can not play after the first 1/2 of the season. The calculation is by dividing the 12 game season into the 3 in which he played (3/12 = 2.5) you round to the next whole number. Thus 3 games is the maximum in which he can play and the 3 games were all in the fist half of the season. He is eligible for medical hardship (not redshirt) as long as he does not play one more play the remainder of the year. It then has to be submitted and approved by the NCAA. I can not see why he would not be approved if he plays no more this year.

they will not approve a hardship for a player that was medically capable of playing during the remainder of the year and it must be supported by medically verified examinations and reports. They turn medical hardships down all the time and hamstring pull is not likely to be granted since he should be able to return at some point in the season.

I respectfully disagree since he does meet all of the requirements to be eligible. As a coach on the hot seat I might use him if I could, but if he is not 100% he is not worth much to me anyway so I would take a shot at the hardship. And if he is not 100% I think that supports not being able to play. That said, If I have 6 wins going to Rice, I play anybody that is breathing that can help me win.

Stop mixing the medical hardship rules and the redshirt rules. They are not the same and it is causing needless confusion. Ultimately, Stallion is right.

I am not mixing them in any way. What I said is fact. What Stallion said
is speculating on what the NCAA may or may not decide. If Martin can not play due to injury and if he does not play any more this season, he is eligible for a medical hardship. Whether or not he would get it is speculative.

I want to clarify my above statement a little. I agree with Stallion that if Martin is able to play and does not that a Medical Hardship would most likely be denied. My contention is that if he is unable to play the remainder of the season due to injury (such as a bad hamstring(s)), that he would be eligible for application by the rules and I personally feel he would be approved. That said, I sincerely hope he will take a snap in tomorrows game and this will all become worhtless banter as many I am sure feel it is already. My original statement on this subject was just to state that by timeline he was still eligible for a medical hardship as long as he did not play one more down.
