Wish we could get a taste of winning.

There's a human element involved here that UNT ignored. Coach Dickey brought a level of respectability to that school that it hadn't had in eons, and to can him now is impossible to defend.

True there is a human element, but the football element takes priority for a D1A head coach. He should not be made a lame duck coach and should have been given the opportunity to leave now, but maybe he didn’t want to.

UNT fans are all thankful for what Dickey has done for our program: 26 consecutive conference wins, 4 conference championships, 4 N.O. Bowl appearances, 1 NO Bowl win!!!

However, letting him go now gives us the ability to bring in a head coach earlier, rather than later, and hopfully save this recruiting season. Recruiting has been terrible the last couple of years and we hoped we would be able to capitalize on the conference championships, but that hasn't happened.

Out of the 15 coaches that have taken the reigns at NT since 1913, only 3 have a worse record. If any other coach played in a conference where they were guarenteed a bowl if they won the championship, it would not have been 42 years between appearances.

Consistently Dickey has publicly criticized the program here in Denton. The Athletic Director is turning things around, new athletic complex and dorms, tennis center, woman's complex... Before RV, our athletic facilities comprised of Fouts Field (~1952), The Super Pit (~1978). You don't need a head coach complaining about how bad things are and that he and the players are always between a rock and a hard place. How does that help our situation or recruiting?

So, how many seasons were we suppose to give him? He was given last year and made very little changes. Gave him this year and we are 2-7. As for our "difficult" schedule, how can we complain about having Tulsa, La Tech, Akron and SMU (sorry, but you are 1 of our 2 wins) on our out-of-conference schedule? Last year's schedule wasn't that bad either. No one expects us to win against Texas, but 35-0 to Middle Tennessee at home?

I can't wait to see who UNT hires. That will be rich. They are probably trying to talk Butch Davis out of going to NC as we speak.

Yeay, y'all got it real bad over there at NTSU with your championships and bowl games and such. We here at SMU feel real sorry for you.

However, NTSU has tasted the fruits of being a good team, and does not like the steps back it has recently taken, so I don't blame you for firing a coach who could not maintain the level to which NTSU had become accustomed.

I think everyone can understand a step back from one season to the next. But our offense is 119 out of 119. Last Saturday we lost to a team with the last place defense. We are ranked just above the bottom of D1A.

The question we've been asking, how can you go from 4 conference championships in a row to consecutive 2 win seasons. The only answers are coaching and recruiting (which points back at coaching). And when we were winning (`03, 9-3), we never were ranked above 75.

Look back at Saturday, our first-string offense couldn't get anything going. Q1 we were down 21-0. Dickey put in the "Green Team". After working with these freshman and sophmores that were never expected to see much playing time, after practice and for just one week, they score on 3 consecutive series and put us back in the game. Obviously we have the talent to be competitive with mid-major teams. If the success of the "Green Team" doesn't say something is wrong with our coaching, I don't know what does.

Well who was coaching the "green team?" If Dickey, what does that say? It sounds like his team has given up on him.

To save face you could have had someone accuse Dickey of giving some player burgers and cheer.
Go Ponies!!
Beat whoever it is we are playing!!

If UNT wants a bigger name coach the best the Mean Green could do is bring in a big name re-tread.

Here are some names:
RC Slocum
John Cooper
Pat Sullivan
[deleted] Tomey
John Mackovic
Jerry Glanville
John Jenkins (in the CFL)
Larry Coker (Soon to be fired)
Gary Barnett (he's not as much as re-tread as some of these other guys)
John L. Smith (see Barnett)

Awesome. Then when Cavan cracks .500 he will float the idea that he will leave for Mississippi State, NTSU can overpay for an extension. Even awesomer!

Wasn't it Ole Miss?

But then again, does it really matter? He's hitting golf balls and raising money for UGA.

Yes it was, but you might leave SMU for Ole Miss, you might leave NTSU for Mississippi State.

Dickey was expected to go out, play the UT's, TTechs, LSU's, etc. for one reason and one reason only. To bring dollars into the pockets of UNT. Then, after he got his brains beat in, he was expected to play well in conference play, an impossible task. He brought respectability to the program, along with 4 championships in a row.

How is he repaid? By getting fired in a year where he, his family, and whole team was distracted by numerous health problems.

The AD at SMU is a former low-ranking asst. AD at TCU. Ask any of the people that worked with him and they will tell you that when he left, there was a tremendous amount of relief that he was gone. He is low-class and just proved it by this firing.

The UNT people think that his firing is great and that the AD is really on track to turning their program around. Obviously they haven't figured RV out yet. Just give him time and he will prove what a jerk he really is. DD and RV haven't gotten along for quite awhile. That's because Dickey saw through his BS early.

I hope PB can find a place for him. He is a class guy and a good coach. Maybe Patterson at TCU will. They played together at KState and are good friends.

As I said, I have no problem with firing a losing coach after a taste of success makes you want more. If SMU could get the taste of success for a start, I'd be happy. All that said, however, we are talking about NTSU and I think this is pretty funny:
