The University must notify the home team that their band is attending, whether it is the full marching band or just a pep/spirit band. If the official notification is made, then a section is reserved for the visiting band and the visiting band is admitted to the game. Without proper notification, the band can not just show up and be admitted, and they would not be allowed to bring their instruments into the stadium.
Space won't be an issue at Rice.

I like your spirit and believe me, if it was up to the band folks, they would do exactly what you describe. I know many of them are planning to attend the game as spectators.
Sneak in a kazoo or something. Where there's a will there's a way, or else somebody that's died.

This is very small-time, not taking your band to a in-state game.

From what I've heard, a "kazoo" band (group of students) was going to attend actually.
A lot of it depends on Rice's end. In 2000, we took a pep band to the UH game with the drum major in charge and had a great time. In 2004, a fellow senior and myself tried to organize a similar pep band trip to Tulsa. We had about 30 people ready to go and play, but Tulsa called the band office and said they would not allow any band or instruments in the stadium without an official director in attendance. Since no directors would be going, we were not allowed to play.
So, I'm just saying, it's not always the students' fault. Hopefully, some contingent of alumni band/current band members can get down there and play. The moral of the story is: plan this stuff out months in advance so that people can schedule accordingly and money can be raised.

As I understand it, that was exactly the phrase used in requiring the band to go to Lubbock earlier this year when they had not originally planned to go. University officials made the band, cheerleaders and pom squad go to Tech because they wanted everyone to know "we can compete with the big boys". Maybe having to schedule that game is why the band dropped the Rice trip?

You are correct sir.
There is only so much money in the travel budget and the Tech trip used the funds that could have been used for Rice. It was a one or the other situation. I disagree with sending the band to an early OOC game that depletes the travel budget so the band can not attend conference games.
I am sure there are others that agree.
Just send 'da money.

DETAILS ARE BEING WORKED OUT BUT IT IS A DONE DEAL. BOTH BAND(S) AND CHEERLEADERS (NOT ALL MEMBERS DUE TO HOLIDAY) WILL BE THERE. THE ATHLETICS DEPT. NEEDED OUR FUNDS AND ARE GRATEFUL!
THE DETAILS ARE BEING WORKED OUT SO I CANNOT TELL YOU COSTS YET BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE 2-3 BUSES AND 2 BOXED MEALS.
If you made a committment or want to help send your check to: Mr. Bob Sharp, C/O Mustang Club, 6024 Airline Rd., Dallas, TX 75275

Tremendous job getting this done, Mr. Poynter. This game is huge for the program and the school and thanks to your efforts, the boys will have some support in the stands. Let's beat Rice and go bowling.
