The guy deserved it. If he keeps working hard for a few years, he may be remembered years from now as the player who helped bring us back to the promised land, mentioned in the same breath as Doak, Dickerson, Craig James, and Kyle Rote. Maybe a little optimistic, but one can always dream.....

If we're going to the Promised Land, do we have to wait for a generation to die off before we can cross over?

Uh... which record? I ask because it appears that that Colt McCoy kid leads him in every major category. Save for INTs... Willis only had 6 picks, to McCoy's 7.

Am I missing something? Okay maybe touchdowns to interceptions ratio? I mean that would be it, but I haven't seen any mention of it...

Hmm....

CONGRATULATIONS! I've watched football at SMU since 1989, and to say Willis is the best freshman QB we've had in that time is an understatement. What a terrific player!

Now go get in the weight room and start running stairs -- be even better in the spring.

Okay I see it now:

His 67.4 percent completion percentage is best in school history and sets an NCAA freshman record.

Awesome!

Interesting....

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/sortables ... 6&sort=com%

1. Colt Brennan, Hawaii 336 467 4589 71.9 9.8 51 9 16 186.68
2. John Beck, BYU 261 371 3510 70.4 9.5 30 6 14 173.27
3. Chase Holbrook, New Mexico St 355 512 4105 69.3 8.0 31 9 39 153.15
4. Colt McCoy, Texas 191 278 2262 68.7 8.1 27 7 14 164.07
5. JaMarcus Russell, LSU 211 308 2797 68.5 9.1 26 7 14 168.10
6. Tyler Palko, Pittsburgh 220 322 2871 68.3 8.9 25 9 22 163.25
7. Kevin Kolb, Houston 247 362 3165 68.2 8.7 25 3 30 162.81
8. Justin Willis, SMU 182 270 2047 67.4 7.6 26 6 28 158.42

So how did he set the record?

Not that I am trying to stick up for a UT guy... and besides... Justin was leading Colt in that category all season. But, um... just curious on that one. Is it becuase that McCoy fellow has a bowl game still to plya? I was under the impression that bowl games didn't count in season stats am I wrong?

Again... congratulations Justin. We're all very proud of you.

Not sure how I'd explain it, but I have done ZERO research into this too. To answer your question though, yes, bowl stats have counted since 2002.

hopefully he'll have enough records and we will have been in 2 bowl games that we won't even have to worry about this... but damn it's nice that he even broke the record, whether he holds it or not... he's one hell of a playmaker... still young, still makes lots of mistakes, still misses lots of open receivers, still fumbles too much, still has problems reading the defense at times. this being said jwill has A LOT of potential (yes potential only means that you havent reached the total output of what you're capable), and I'm excited to watch him and Sanders for the next 3 years! hopefully these two and the other WR's will spend a lot of hours throwing (peyton & marvin) and watching film so they can instinctively know what the other is thinking... we have a foundation finally that we can build around... that's the difference in the past years. we have a freshmen QB who we can market to recruits.. when was the last time we had this? Shan-derrick? haha yah right...

I can not remember a single conference Freshman of the Year. Is Willis the first in school history?
