N. Texas v. SMU: Let's compare. N. Texas has a lot of success the last few years by winning their conference and going to bowl games. Not bad for a school who has not been in Div. 1-A for a long time and has a smaller athletic budget than many of the Div. 1-A schools in Texas including SMU. They suffer two losing seasons and make a change and hire one of the most successful highschool football coaches in the nation. N. Texas looked at the success of Art Briles at Houston and believes Todd Dodge can be successful too. If he does not work out you cannot blame the adminstration for not trying. They have shown they want to win.
SMU, on the other hand, has had the same coach despite no winning seasons, conference championships, or bowl games. Instead of making a change to show the alumni, fans, and students that losing is not tolerated at SMU as it was the past 20 years, they give the coach one more year and continue to tell the fans to wait until next year. SMU has a much larger athletic budget than N. Texas and much nicer facilities yet SMU cannot seem to get it. Whether Todd Dodge succeeds or not at N. Texas is not relevant. What is relevant, N. Texas hired him because losing is not acceptable to the people calling the shots. If Todd Dodge does not win, then they will replace him as well with someone else. They will not however give him a decade to build a winner.
The Todd Dodge hiring has people talking about N. Texas. On the other hand, no one is talking about SMU outside of this board. Why? Because we keep the status quo despite failure.
