I was watching the game and realized what great formations Boise State was using and me and my son starting to diagram up the plays and how we could adjust it to his playbook next year. Early in the 1st half, Boise State had a major overshift on with 3 lineman out wide with a WR behind them. They then dropped a receiver in the slot as well. They then had a guard, center, guard, tackle and aWR split out wide. Looked like a pass to the overload and OU had no clue. However, the play before was reviewed before the play was run. Told my son what I would like to do is bring in the receiver out wide all by himself and put him next to the QB, fake a pass, and run the Statue of Liberty reverse. He told me the play would never work. He changed his mind at the end of the game :-)

Wouldn't it be nice to see an OC actually work at coming up with situational plays and trying to make the defense work to keep up with you. All I know is our version of the spread is boring and our OC is lacking in imagination. Then again I think our head coach is too conservative and lacking in imagination as well so that might be part of the problem as well.

When i was playing in Middle School we ran a bunch of OVERLOAD and STACK plays and being a linemen it was always fun being out there with the receivers and help spread the field.

However, I do understand why a lot of OCs dont run plays like this or have them in the playbook.

1. Play wont get used everyday in practice and most likely wont work during game time.

Boise said that they run the Hook and Ladder every day before game day at least 10 times but they said IT NEVER WORKS in practice. They still went to it late in the game knowing the OU D would most likely bite on it.

As for the Statue of Liberty play, a "TRUE" defensive would eat out the play but being that it was in OT the OU D was tired and worn out. They did not stick to their assignments and some players bit and did not stay in contain like they are suppose to.

2. OCs use alot of pass blocking and run blocking schemes for O Linemen in the Spread O.

SMU runs the spread O and i bet Burns is not risky enough to add more Linemen schemes to the already multiple blocking schemes SMU already has.

I WOULD like to see MORE trick plays used during SMU games. The Z man said they emptied out the playbook in Glendale. After the Fiesta Bowl, I am sure more schools will be changing up their playbooks come spring practice.

After the death penalty SMU had a great coach, one who took the historically worst NFL franchise and took it to a Super Bowl, and guess what, he didn't win many games. We had a coach who apparently has done pretty well in the NFL as an offensive coach with the Green Bay Packers. He failed at SMU. Yes, coaching matters, but its not everything. Boise can accept virtually any student who wants to attend. They are a tier 3 academic institution. So, when they go after JUCO's, they can take the minimal academic candidates and keep them eligible. We don't have that luxury. The better example would be Wake Forest. Al Groh has turned the tables on the ACC. They are a private school with decent academics, Baylor-like rules and yet they managed to win the ACC. What are they doing that we're not doing? I hope that is a question that Bennett and Orsini are asking.

We have the example in our own backyard...TCU. It is amazing that we refuse to do the things necc. to compete with them and others.
