You've never really made any sense to me. A lot like a guy who says he's a surfer, but has lived his entire life in Kansas...for example.

Longtime spouts the prototypical GARBAGE we've heard from the suck-ups for years and then concludes that Bennett uses JUCO correctly by adding 1-2 a year to fill holes. You have you head up your [deleted] if you think that Phil Bennett doesn't not want to be able to recruit the same players every other team that has beaten his [deleted] over the last 5 years. I got a great idea why don't we let the Head Coach decide who to recruit within NCAA rules. Longtime is a blind fool talking generalities. Believe I given upwards of 50 examples where a JUCO has played a huge role in actually beating an SMU football or basketball team.

This morning though I did visit the "free" Rivals report and looked at the recruits committed to the CUSA teams. If you get a chance, look at SMU and then look at UTEP. We have one 2 star JC player who according to Rivals has not yet signed, but I think earlier reports indicated he had signed and is in school now. UTEP has virtually rebuilt a defense with JC signings. They have already signed 3 LBS, 2 DBs, and 1 DT. All are rated higher than any of our recruits (with the possible exception of Josh R). They are signed and I assume in school and ready to contribute. We have needed this type of help in the past, we need this kind of help now, and we will need this type of help in the future and it truly irks me that we are not about to recruit on the same basis as our competition. I am certain that UTEP is not getting all of these guys and we are merely not convincing them to come to SMU. The restrictions need further loosing (I realize some progress has been made) if we are to be competitive.

You probably know this, but some major universities are tied to jucos. They send players there out of HS with the understanding that they will go to the major university after two years. Test scores are out the window after two years of juco. Why SMU has not done this. My guess is twofold, the university does not want a student who cannot get in from HS and most good JUCO players have histories that the hilltop does not want to encounter.

bigdaddy--its a case by case evaluation. didn't smu want adrian haywood? must have. some jc students are good enough students. and plenty are of good character. its selectivity we want. but even so, we don't seem to get enough of them to add depth where needed.

We had our share of problems this past year with the choir boys. I am not asking to open up the prisons ala "The Longest Yard". Just some help.

Well, maybe I stated it in absolute terms. My point is, if you are not good enough to play out of HS, or smart enough to get in, some coaches will not waste $$$ or time, when they can get a player out of HS and grow him into the program, and not have to worry about keeping the player eligible. The juco players we have now did not contribute much except for Haywood and Chase. We have to remember where we are at. UTEP is not the educational institution that SMU is. Well, not many universities are except for the Ivy League.

I said it before, if it were up to PB we would have a few thugs, every football team has them and needs them, but the institution will not allow it. We have the nicest bunch of football players in the nation. And to make it clear, thugs come in all colors. Tulsa had two linebackers that were as thugish as I have seen. They were spitting in the faces of some of our players. Now thats football.

Players want to go where they'll be noticed. The Sun Bowl is regularly packed. It's the only game in town.

Our attendance is one of the worst in the league.

It is usually packed with 65% hispanic, because there is nothing else to do in west texas. Believe me, I played HS football in west texas. Friday and Saturday games closes down the town. TT is a prime example. They are good now, but back in the SWC era they generated packed stadiums at that time. People have choices in the metroplex. We have to win games just to get the alumni there. The media attention in the metro is one of the best in the nation. Players will get noticed, but we have to win.

One thing for sure, what JUCOs we have been able to get to come here recently have made a tremendous impact for us on the football field. Just to name a few: 2005-06 Senior Starting DT Adrian Haywood, 2004-2006 Senior Starting Wide Receiver Bobby Chase, 2006 Senior Starting DB Randell Goode, 2005 Starting QB Jared Romo and many others who have played alot as starters/reserves. Obviously,we should try to find several who can help every year.
