I thought Bennett's first class was rated pretty decently in the 30s or so?
Does Stallion have all Bennett class ratings? I think its kinda gone
downhill since, but this year I would guess is an uptick?
As long as we are making progress on the field, and we are at a snail's
pace, I don't think I wanna blow Bennett's team up to start at square 1
again

His '03 class (which I guess would be considerd his first class since much of his '02 class was inherrited after Cavan's firing) was ranked #62 in the country by rivals. That is his best class to date based on their rating system.
'07 #86
'06 #107
'05 #81
'04 #76
'03 #62
'02 #69

Correction, for the time being:
SMU 0 4 =4

Please refresh my memory, who is the TCU four star recruit? What position is he going to play?
Comparing SMU and TCU recruiting is a bit of an inexact science. TCU loses one or two recruits every year to non-qualification, but they also get lucky, too. They win more than the lose of these risk players. These are players that we can't offer under our current system. So, there are some apples and oranges aspects to comparing the two schools. Yes, they are our rival and yes, we are similar in many ways, but we have tougher admission standards for athletes than TCU. Saying that you've signed a four star and getting great numbers on signing day helps you for the next year even if the kid ends up at junior college in August. Its a game we can't play and probably never will again. We can only hope to pull off a Wake Forest or Boise State run with what we've got and then build on that.

I would love to see a rating service that not only takes wild [deleted] guesses at the HS seniors and JUCOs but I would like to see how they rate the individual players on the different rosters. I appreciate the fact that a guys is a 4 star recruit but how does that translate into the fact that he is also a 4 star loser that can't pass a class or has a tendancy to get thrown into jail and off the team. Keep re-rating the classes to see how well a player is really doing would be more useful than this pie in the sky crap.
Take a look at this years Freshmen All-american QB's
Justin Willis was a 3-star
Colt McCoy was a 3-star
Riley Skinner was a great unknown
Take a look at the list below and see if you remember any of these guys from 2005 being difference makers.

In fairness, that 4-star quit the team after his soph year

Pull your head out of your as* and realize what sort of competition these top rated QBs face to see the field at big time programs. Do you really think that Justin Willis is just that much better than the 27 dual threat QBs ranked ahead of him and thats soley why he had such an impact as a redshirt freshman? Or do you think its because he came into a program that had no established options at QB and was able to start as redshirt freshman, in addition to being a talented player?

Case in point; look at this bio:
Born on May 17, 1982 ... Played on the Northridge (Calif.) team that was a finalist at the 1994 Little League World Series ... Was featured in the HBO documentary "Freshman Year," filmed in 1999-2000 ... Likes to jet ski and play ping pong ... Sports hero is Joe Montana ... Older brother, Jack, is a pitcher in the San Diego Padres organization and younger brother, Justin, is on UC Irvine's baseball team ...Attended Chatsworth (Calif.) High ... Was a 1999 Super Prep All-American, Prep Star All-American, Tom Lemming Top 100, Super Prep All-Far West, Tom Lemming All-West, Long Beach Press-Telegram Best in the West first team, Orange County Register Fab 15 third team, Tacoma News Tribune Western 100, Las Vegas Sun Super 11 second team and All-L.A. City second team pick as a senior quarterback ...
As a Senior, he was ranked as the #8 QB and overall #53 of the top high school players in the nation in ESPN's Tom Lemming's Top 100, with notes stating he was a "Pro-style pocket passer with a very strong, accurate delivery."
Wow, pretty impressive. But look at his college stats. In 33 games with the football team, he completed 20 of 33 passes (60.6 percent) for 192 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. He rushed 11 times for 31 yards (2.8 avg), caught one pass for 12 yards and recorded a tackle. He once had a fractured foot, was moved to backup tight end at one point before moving back to QB his senior year. But, hey, Matt Cassel just had the bad luck of being Matt Leinart's backup. That didn't stop him from having enough talent to be drafted by the Patriots and being their backup qb. He did play most of a game in 2005 against the Dolphins and went 11-20 and two TD's and no interceptions.[/quote]

Stallion,
How dare you question our beloved coach with these facts about our recruiting futility in a brand new facility!!
Phillip Bennett has likely forgotten more about recruiting than the rest of us ever knew.
Willis to slot receiver!

I'm not going to lose much sleep over it. I've said its quite clearly the best recruiting class in the last 4 recruiting classes-he did hit on 5 of my remaining 8-10 or so targets left on the board a month before signing date-so he finished strong. More importantly Bennett has run out of excuses-he will either go to a bowl this year or this was his last recruiting class. I'm betting someone else will be announcing the next recruiting class because of recruiting failures in 2004-2006 not 2007.

Lighten up Francis! My point is not how great JW is but look at the 3 guys who were the best Freshman QB's in the country last year. Colt McCoy was 9 spots ahead of JW and was just a 3-star. Or go back the year before or the year before that. Amazingly you never hear from many of these top QB's. That is just the easiest position to track. My point is these ratings are just a crap shoot. Kind of like the MLB draft. God knows that there have been plenty of 43rd round guys that turned into All-stars.

Thats where I think you are missing the point. It is likely that you will never hear from a lot of these top rated QB's but it is not always because the ratings are a "crap shoot". These top rated QBs going to top rated programs compete for playing time with other guys every bit as good as them. #7 pro style Joe Cox from your 2005 list, committed to Georgia. I have never heard of him and not sure if he is any good or not but the very next year Georgia landed Stafford who was regarded as the top QB prospect in the country. If Stafford develops into a top notch college QB as expected, Joe Cox could end up as the best backup in the country. Kid might be good enough to start on over half of the D1 football programs but you would still never hear from him. And by your thought process that would mean the rankings are a crapshoot bc the #7 ranked QB never had college success but the #15, #25, #42, etc etc did. Simply not true.

time will tell if this group becomes Bennett's most productive bunch. I will agree with his comments that it looks like a pretty balanced group, but would have been nice to see another RB in there somewhere. I think the OL signees are key. Remember that we've had some casualties in that area in recent years (Boren & Allison are a couple who come to mind that that we were counting on to contribute in the 2 deep by now).
Baby steps. Looks to me like we continue to take baby steps towards that goal of competing at a top 25 level. Still have a long ways to go, but I'm looking forward to spring ball to see if we can fill some holes vacated by this year's seniors. Let's just hope we see enough improvement to find 7 wins on next year's schedule. That's critical at this point, i.e., that the program keeps moving in the right direction.
