Here's to the class of 1960I graduated from college (somewhere else before I came to SMU) the same year Don finished at SMU in 1960. In those days we were called Southern Meredith University. We had other good passers before and after him, like Fred Benners and Chuck Hixson who won titles that eluded Don. But the Dandiroo was like watching Staubach scamble and improvise big plays. Did you remember that Don considered going to seminary (bad idea)? Here's hoping he is enjoying retirement. Wonder what he thinks should happen to his alma mater these days? Guess he might sing "Turn Out The Lights, The Party's Over."
Sam I Am
My son and I met he and his wife at the Ford Stadium Lettermans BBQ.
He is a nice man and like the way life is now. Out of the spotlite and fun. My son did not even know who we was and I left it that way till the next day. Don told my son he was a east Texas boy and the he loved to play guitar too. They talked for 45 minutes or so. great guy. Mustang Militia: Fight the good fight"
I do not know Don except in the most casual way. We were in the same fraternity, but he arrived as I left. In a number of contacts with him over the years he has been humble, kind and friendly. He is very bright and took his classwork very seriously. His father was a country lawyer in a small Texas town and I think he was Don's life model. I was present when he received his Distinguished Alumni Award in 1983 and he said that the thing he was most proud about was that he walked across the stage to get his degree after attending classes for 8 semester. He never took a summer school class and he never took less than a full load. We really need to respect Don for his appreciation for the education he got, which he places above the Letters he won
