You've got that bassackwards... it is not right for the person NOT to attend. It's a shame common courtesy and good manners have to be mandated these days, but if an individual thinks so little of the award that it is an imposition to accept it in person, choose another person... one who will appreciate the gesture... respect is a two-way street. Seems a lot of people have forgotten that.

So you believe that anyone who wants to give Dickerson something should just call him up and tell him to stop whatever he is doing and show up. What a joke. If the award meant something to him, he would show up. The award should be given for performance, not attendance. You get a perfect attendance award for that. If a worthy athlete literally died while setting a record that earned them the right to win the honor of the Texas High School Hall of Fame, they would be denied being recognized unless somene is willing to roll in the body. My guess is that they contacted Dickerson, he already had something planned that he felt more important (could have been playing in a football game earning a living) and thus he is snubbed for the award. I doubt, although I could be wrong, that the NFL Hall of Fame makes attendance mandatory. They have earned the presitige that brings the honorees to the event.

By the way, I am inducting you into the Arkansas Message Board Hall of Fame tonight in Little Rock. You have to be here to get the award so call me when you arrive.

The death scenario is BS. Certainly they would make exception for that. It's a good rule. Dickerson needs to say he'll show up.

Emmitt Smith tried to ask for money to show up a few years ago for the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. He was WAY out of line. Someone must have explained it to him because he dropped that act quick.

That was just a little bit or sarcasm. Of course it can be hard to pick up over a computer...

OK, so if you want to leave out "death" although that would exclude one by their own rules, what if you were elected but it was on the same night as your daughters first dance recital, or her wedding, or her graduation from dental school. Who do you blow off? WITH NO DISRESPECT to any of the current members, is it not obvious that any time you skip past a deserving person you are then selecting the next person in line, thus you have tainted your Hall by not including the best players by your own admission. People can continue to hate Dickerson because he does not stand on the sideline at every game but to deny that he is one of the greatest from High School through the Pros is ridiculous.
