I just want the best person and in my opinion that would be someone who is well known, has been a college head coach at a large program, and has strong NFL ties.
In talking to others, some have said a top black coach would be a large plus in that it might help some recruits get over the stereotype of playing at a rich white school.
Any thoughts?

That rich white school stereotype doesn't seem to hurt USC too much.

But I imagine it does hurt SMU recruiting moreso than USC recruiting. Anyways, with the sort of neighbourhood USC is in, I'm sure they feel somewhat at home without stepping too far out of campus.

That's patently racist.

BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!
For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

After the burgers and Cheer fiasco it would help our standing in the black community if we hired a black coach. If someone like Terry Bowden (a former very successful head coach in college) is not available we should definitely give this serious consideration. In our case I think color does make a difference. We need to make amends for the shabby treatment of Jimmy Tubbs.

I know everyone is excited about the possibility of Bowden but it may be all pie in the sky. At any rate here is an interesting story re BCA and possible suits. We were the 1st to have a black scholarship player in the SWC. Has there been a black head football coach in a d-1 school in Texas?
I don't recall one off hand.

USC is also relatively larger (15,000 undergrad), in the second largest city in the country. People don't stick out as easily there.
And the surrounding neighhborhoods are now more like Little Mexico than Harlem.
GO MUSTANGS!
FIGHT ON!

I think I'lll answer my own question. How could I forget the great Matt Simon at UNT and the Safeway Bowl.

Gimme a break.
If the best coaching candidate/recruiting machine we can get happens to be black, great. Get him. If he's some other color, get him. Race should play no role in that determination.
