I believe this is the reference to SMU in Nutt's speech
Nutt made note that the program had come a long way since 1997 when Razorback supporters had asked him if the team could beat SMU. "Now," Nutt said, "they ask if we can make it into the BCS."

That's the reference..I thought i was interesting that he would mention us..after all we were not all that and a bag of chips in 1998.

But that was what the Arky boosters wanted to know when he was hired. I remember hearing it at the time. SMU had owned Danny Ford for the last couple of years and it had everyone up there pissed.

Plus, they used us for a Dallas recruiting trip. In 1997, the Independence Bowl (stadium, not post season) offered us a check to move our home game at Cotton Bowl to Shreveport. It really pissed off the Root-Hogs. I seem to remember Ford mouthing off about it. And then we beat him...again.

In 1997, during Cavan's first year, SMU beat Arkansas 31-9 in Shreveport, Louisiana and the Mustangs held Arkansas to MINUS -21 yards rushing ! Worst rushing record in Arkansas history.

Sure but why mention it in his statement...why not any other schools? After all they beat us in 1990, 1991, 1993, 1994, and were already in the SEC. They won their Western Division in 1995. In fairness we beat them in 1995, 1996, 1997 but they were already focusing on being the SEC champions.

Now that was an unbelieveably poorly Coached team at Arkansas. Funniest moment-I think I got this right- Arkansas got a First Down but didn't realize it and kicked a FG instead. Correct me if I'm wrong but it was something strange like that.

I think simply because instead of being challenged to win the SEC when he came in, the boosters wanted to know if he could beat SMU. I think he was saying how far they'd come. But I like your positive thinking about it.

as a benchmark of how far they've come. when he was hired, the alums wanted to know if the team could beat a POS SMU team, now the bar has been raised and the alums want to know if they can get into the BCS.
it's not that hard to figure out. basically he's raised expectations. get it?
Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally

Your story may have happened but what I remember was they scored a TD and Ford thought they were short and called another play. Turned out it actually became a 2 point conversion attempt and they did not make it.

If we're going on record, I'll go out on a limb and say...
it will NOT be a Bowden of any kind. That's about all I'm good for.
