Well I guess someone wanted the Baylor job after all. Shocking-shocking that so few really understand the hole SMU has dug.

Jobs that nobody in their right mind want:
- Baylor
- Duke
- Northern Illinois

SMU is not a bad gig if we actually pay BCS money. We win 7 freaking games and go to to the Cancer Bowl in Houma, Louisana and the coach is lauded as a genius. He wins CUSA and he is coach of the year. You get to live in Highland Park. You are surrounding by one of the largest collections of D1 football talent in the country. Also, you are not the doormat of a BCS conference like Baylor and Duke. You don;t play second fiddle to a basketball team like at Duke. More importantly you do not live in Dekalb or Waco.

Sorry, but all of those teams have been to a bowl in the last 15 years. Baylor and Duke are in BCS conferences. Northern Illinois has gotten recent notoriety with their breakout year (2004) and Garret Wolfe. SMU has to take some major leaps to compete with that.

I'd be interested to see what consideration Houston Nutt gave SMU (or Baylor for that matter) before taking the Ole Miss job. Given how quickly he was hired, my hunch is none.

Nutt had supposedly been offered by SMU through intermediaries. He apparently was never interested in either job. Orsini swung and missed.

Be careful that you dont wind up with a guy who is just coming to your school to retire. A guy in his 60's who's competitive drive is waning, but he sees that big salary as a 5 million dollar nest egg that he can retire on.

Not as big a selling point as some people like to think.

No, we're the doormat of C-USA. We've moved to progressively worse conferences, and we're still dead last. We've been moving backwards.

Ok, you got me there.

If you don't know if Nutt was offered by Orsini, then that's very shaky. There would be more validity attached to this post if you learned Orsini offered.

That interemediary could have said "what would it take for you to take the SMU job" or "Are you interested in it?"

If this is what you mean, then fine. But ADs offer jobs not middle men.
