that would be ironic to be the first team to fire and probably the last to hire
this is nuts
the reason we were first to fire wasn't to beat other teams to the hiring punch (regardless of what some on this board say). it was to raise funds. several members of the Circle of Champions were responsible for the buyout of PB's remaining contract but under the condition that the firing take place immediately. (actually, 2 of them even offered more money to have him not finish coaching the last 4 games).
so what the early firing did, was allow Orsini to have his $12MM checkbook to shop with, which is much more important than a couple weeks timing.
Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally

Thanks "Phil_Bennett's_Mustache" I see your point about the money being the important part.
But still........... mid-january?
I mean I know we should not be upset because we are not behind at this point, but mid-january is still over a month and half away.
2 more weeks I can understand, but a month and half more?
Why that long?
Didn't Baylor hire someone from the NFL?
C-ya @ Milos!

Waiting until mid-January will set this program back 2 years. No recruits are left on the table by mid-January.

If we leverage the pig run properly, we can change some minds.

I think we should wait until halftime of the Red-Blue game, in order to maximize attendance at what is sure to be a win for SMU.

Oh and waiting until mid-January to START recruiting will be like a 5 year hangover because that's how long that mistake will haunt us. First a coach has to hire an assistant staff WHICH by the way will have already been picked over by other schools.
Coach: Uh Hello Recruit X I'm interested in setting up an in-home visit on January 28.
Coach: Uh-Paul Johnson new SMU Football Coach; OK if one of those 6 other campus visits doesn't work out please keep us in mind
Coach: Yes that is Paul J-O-H-N-S-O-N. from SMU
Coach: Wait Wait before you hang up I think you might be able to play immediately because all the JUCOs I need have signed
Coach: Hello? Hello?

There seemed to be more credence with the names of Paul Johnson and George O'Leary than any one else.
For the record, these statements came from current PLAYERS. They told me tonight it will be mid January before the actual coach is named. I asked if the new head coach is still playing, and they all responded they couldn't tell me.
Trying not to bring any rumors to the table, I spoke with a guy who catches the ball and a guy who throws the ball. There is a slight possibility that these individuals MIGHT live together. They had no more information than the rumors that have been circulated around here.
I hope that the sources are wrong. This board will implode well before January.
Hell better hope its wrong for recruiting purposes... Mid January would be a late late start to recruiting.

If the coach isn't named until January, we might as well kiss the chances of nailing down a solid recruiting class goodbye. By then most of the solid talent will have committed or already have a pretty good idea of what they're going to do.
Those who complain about a problem are simply wasting time they could use to fix it.
Potential is nothing, performance is everything.

I seriously think Steve-O is a little smarter than that. If anyone thinks they are going to wait till January they are crazy. Do you think S.O. is just forgetting about recruiting or it slipped his mind. We will have a new coach by next week.

This is probably just the case of kids not listening. From the RUMORS on this board, the players were told the coach would be announced PRIOR to their Christmas break which I think was said to be around 12/8/07. I would then imagine that Orsini said "you will get to MEET the new coach around the middle of January. The way kids listen today I would think that could very well be interpreted to be "we will not have a new coach until the middle of January". Relax.
