i guess youve never seen Leonard play

I don't doubt that, just saying, there is no reason to not believe in Jones, he builds players

he does build them but Leonard was a beast on the line as a freshman. i sure hope these rumors arent true and that the kid starts hitting the books and making those grades to play

Hey this is the big daddy. You can believe me if you want. Givens basically flunked out and has to petition the school for some kind of waiver. I am not sure how SMU does it. He is currently not in school and will not be until the petition is heard. Ryan is enrolled in a JUCO in California, no longer a Pony. If you seen some of my previous post about the D-Line I never mentioned Ryan. He has been gone for a while. Not sure about McCann. Givens and Ryan will be missed if Givens is not granted the waiver. Givens situation goes back to when he was sick and near death and had to miss so much school. Talk about taking care of your players. I am also under the assumption that Givens is not getting any help from the athletic department with this matter.

knowing how SMU handles many things, it doesnt sound good for CG. as for Ryan, it just goes to show you that hard work on the field must equal to hard work in the classroom or you wont be playing FBS ball.

Is this because we have been leaderless for awhile? I am sure June has been briefed on all player issues and will take whatever steps he deems appropriate. I know Givens had some serious medical issues. What I do not know is to what extent he has taken responsiblilty for catching up on his academics. The athletic department can only do so much. I can only hope he does what is necessary to succeed both at SMU and afterwards.

from what ive been reading the past 10 minutes online, if givens waiver is upheld, then he would have to take a full load of classes this semester and in the summer to retain his eligibility for this season.

but lets not forget. GIVENS WAS NEVER REDSHIRTED.

Yes, I realize that Columbus was deathly ill and I'm thrilled that he is still able to play, so he has a reason for his academic shortcomings.

But....(the following has nothing to do with Co Gum's situation)

This is a big issue for me. I love college football, but if a player isn't getting it done in the classroom, there shouldn't be additional help just because he plays football. Double standard, it's not ever going to change, but I never understood why so many people want to give athletes a break, surely you can get all C's in the classes they are in, plus the additional help they get. If you have your head on straight, you will have enough personal pride to at least pass your classes

Why? It was the football staff that was replaced, not the LEC.

By the way, I saw Givens walking on campus yesterday. Maybe he was still enrolled, maybe he wasn't, but he was on campus.

You are correct in your statement sir. My point is this. We pay Randy Ross and Steve Stigall to monitor certain aspects of the football program. Ross to my understanding is the guy who should have been on top of this when Givens was sent home for several weeks by school officials because of the illness. How is this coming back to bite us in the butt now. Yes, Givens is ultimately responsible, but remember, he was sent home by school officials because the illness was so contaigous.

Hell just go to class. I will point this out again. Where is Randy Ross in all of this. My understanding is that Ryan was not going to class. Is there not some sort of oversight to determine if a player is even in class. He was practicing everyday, but not going to class? Small as this campus is you would think one of his professors would say something on game day when they seen him on the field but did not see him in the classroom during the week.

Who??

It's one thing if the school relaxes their admissions standards to let players of lower intellectual caliber in but they can't really just give them passing grades. C'mon people, this is smu. not exactly the hardest place in the world to pass a couple classes so you can keep playing ball.

Up until like sometime in November I believe it was, there were certain 'checkpoints' where the football players had to 'check in' with LEC people to make sure they were going to class but after a certain date, they decided that they no longer were required to do these checkins and stopped them altogether, saying 'this does not mean you don't have to go to class anymore'. Obviously, just saying that isn't going to help...

And what I heard is McCann didn't know when his final exam for a class was and missed it but even so, I hear that he will probably most likely be eligible this semester anyways. Don't ask...I don't know why.

These athletes are just as smart as the other students. I didn't have anyone reminding me to go to class and making sure I did so. (Might have helped my GPA if I had...) These guys need to realize their responsibilities. Do they have to be reminded to go to practice?
