Special Delivery,
There are many things that have me pulling for SMU. I'm first a foremost a football fan. I became a fan of Eric Dickerson when he was with the Rams. When Eric went to Atlanta, that in turn made me more aware of who June Jones was and I began to follow coach Jones career as well. I'm a San Diego native and Charger fan, so there is that added connection of June Jones brief stint with the Chargers.
From a Charger fans perspective, there is also that connection with Dennis Mcknight. Dennis played o-line for the Chargers during the success of the Dan Fouts era, so many Charger fans have fond memories of Dennis Mcknight. Dennis Mcknight's nickname while with the Chargers was Conan. During his time with the Chargers, he sported that Conan the Destroyer look- long hair and huge guns. Dennis Mcknight aslo coached at a local San Diego high school and had a short stint at San Diego State where he was reunited with another former Charger offensive lineman, Ed White. He's got such a positive vibe about him that is both motivating and inspiring. If I were a player, I'd run through a brick wall for the man. When spring ball practices open, be sure to say "hey Conan!" when you see coach Mcknight. I'm sure it will bring a smile on his face.
Both June Jones and Dennis Mcknight are classy guys. As a fan, you can't help but wish them nothing but success. Those feelings for your new coaches from their old fans are definitely spilling over to SMU. So not only do you have Hawaii fans pulling for Jones succes, you've also got Charger fans, Atlanta Falcon fans, not to mention the Eric Dickerson fans who remember the glory days of SMU.
I'm happy for you fans of SMU. To go through all those down years after receiving the death penalty from the NCAA is much too long. Based on what happened to your University is all the proof anyone needs that no school should ever be dealt such a harsh punishment again. It's not fair to the players and it's definitely not fair to the fans.
SMU will be back in the polls and crashing the BCS party within a couple of years. June Jones runs a clean program and your success in the future will not only have been earned through hard work and dedication, but also because everyone there is so deserving.
Once again, best of luck folks! I think June Jones first recruiting class will have everyone pleasantly surprised and the entire state of Texas is going to take notice.
