Guys, I'd love to sit here and debate this all night, but I've got a meeting with the Bobs.

Owens didn't say anything that any of us wouldn't say if we were coaching at Lee. He's trying to protect his player and let JJ know that he didn't appreciate the slap-down.[/quote]..............BS.... Owens and his Tyler press guy Parry talked about "how this is going to hurt SMU recruiting all over Texas" etc. Total BS... when ALL the other coaches in the state that had players scholarships pulled by BAYLOR & OKIE STATE in recent weeks, they did not say anything about not allowing them to recruit their schools......Whether you like Owens or not, he has gone WAY PAST just feeling for his player.....I believe Owens has made a mistake that will he will regret down the line.......All of East Texas is not going to follow his lead and cut out SMU recruiting...What a Joke ! June Jones is going to be very successful here like he has been everywhere he has been and East Texas coaches can't wait to visit with him !

Players verbally commit and change their minds all the time. Why can't schools do the same? That's why it's non-binding. I realize players need to "reserve" their spot in the school's recruiting class but there is no loyalty required so it's a two way street - either both can renege or they can't. Coaches generally understand it's not a good practice and i would guess rarely, if ever, use it on players they recruited and only for a former coaches players. I truly feel bad for the players in this situation but if you know the coach has been fired and then you receive a letter that tells you the new coach may not honor your commitment, it's your own damn fault if you don't at least start to think about a backup plan. Even if SO had not sent the players a letter, they should be smart enough (or at least their HS coach should) to figure this out. I commend SO for his thoughtfulness for the players by sending them the letter and wish this would have turned out differently but that's how life is. If nothing else, hopefully this will be a good life lesson for players to take some more responsibility/initiative when they encounter similar situations in their lives in the future (because this certainly won't be the last time).
