There weren't just alot of people willing to come here for $450,000 or whatever per year. Our rules, our faculty, our admission policies, our athletic director...we probably got as good as we deserved. You're right. I was just as critical of his performance, but I can't help but think a young inexperienced head coach had a great deal stacked against him...least of all having "Copeland" as his mentor and sponsor.

I think the difference is people will accept you criticizing his results or his abilities as a HC, but they don't like him being insulted (e.g. like calling him a clown).

Ralph Minter took the DC job at Marshall. Bennett was offered the job but declined because he was very close to a BCS DC job.

And if you look at him at K-State, he inherited some very good players when Mike Stoops was the DC there. Their defenses got worse every year after stoops left and Bennett's players started playing. IMHO, Bennett is a good position coach and a good recruiter in Texas but is a horrible game planner and a worse evaluator of talent.

In his defense he could be stating that he thinks he is a good recruiter (ie salesman) but poor evaluator of talent. I won't say anything about your boy PB though.

hey corky from life goes on, a good recruiter is a guy who is able to sign players he wants and close in the room.....it has nothing to do being a good judge of talent. Take Rick Neuishel, signed a lot of top 100 players who never panned out or a guy like UCLA coach Steve Lavin, signed a ton a top players who never did squat.

good recruiter and good talent evaluater are completely different deals. Tom Rossley couldn't out recruit Gumpy-he had whatever success he had based on talent evaluation. He lost 22 straight SWC games to end SMU's SWC tenure. Give me a recruiter.

Phil Bennett is a really "nice guy". We have a lot of "nice guys" at where I work as well. We just don't let them work on the most important projects. PB is not head coaching material and may not even be DC material. He may be a good defensive position coach and should never be allowed to evaluate talent.

He loved his job here, but just didn't have whatever "it" is. Perhaps he will find it in the future. Maybe he stayed one year too long, but he loved the job and our school. Let's just wish him well...

why is it whenever someone criticizes PB's coaching job someone has to quickly post something about how nice of a guy he is? I get it. He's a nice guy. I'm interested in results on the football field. There are lots of "nice guys" out there - doesn't mean a whole lot in the football world.

I don't think PB is checking this board every day. It's not going to hurt his feelings.

HEY! PB has forgotten more results than you will ever know.

Jesus, let it go. He IS a good defensive coordinator, and he busted his tail at SMU. Didn't work out, for reasons that have been detailed countless times and for other reasons that haven't. Wish the man well and move on.
