There were rumors that Oscar had visited Wannstedt when he coached the Bears and Dolphins, respectively, but I believe those to be just that...rumors. However, I heard that Oscar was up in the Steel City this weekend. Something about working on Ben Roethlisberger's motorcycle.

Wannstead is a class act and Phil is in the same league. Congrats, Phil. You will enjoy big time BE FB and working with Dave, who did a good job with the Chicago Bears.

Stallion wrote:they extended Wannstead because he was having a helluva recruiting years after bringing in one of the best RBs in the country last year. Only idiots judge college coaches before Year 4-5. He is absolutely getting the job done in recruiting and has had classes ranked in the 20s in each of the last 3 years. He is building the program which will soon become obvious. Didn't they upset West Virgina or somebody in the last game. As for Bennett I'd much rather have him at Pitt than at Arkansas who has disappeared from Texas recruiting this year.
their running back is one of the best i've ever seen, he is very very good

Did you purposely gloss over Wannstadt's time with the Dolphins? It certainly wasn't pretty.

Yes, I did purposely gloss over the Dolphins. Not sure I blame him for all the problems.

What in the heck does coaching in the NFL really translate to College Football. Just about nothing. See Lou Holtz, Nick Saban, Petrino, Erickson etc-the list is about 2 miles long. In college you can recruit 25 3,4, and 5 stars per year. In the NFL you get 1 First, 1 Second and 1 Third Round Draft choice. College is about outrecruiting your competition. The two jobs are totally different. There are a lot of decent NFL Coach that could not be successful in College as well if they couldn't recruit.

PB got a mention on the 10 PM Fox News for being hired by Pitt. Not sure why it was newsworthy, but there it was.

.....also took a team to the Super Bowl and had some of the best recruiting classes in the country:
Recruiting ability is far from the only quality that separates college coaches from the NFL. You have to be able to develop talent, keep your kids passing their classes, keep them out of trouble, etc. Dealing with 18-22 year olds--most of whom will never make it to the NFL--is totally different than plugging professional adults who are the best of the best into a system. The skill level that kids have coming out of high school versus coming out of college is totally different, not to mention their maturity level, mental toughness, etc. It also takes a different approach to motivate 18 year olds versus guys who are getting paid several hundred grand a year to do what you tell them.
College coaches are not only recruiters, but more importantly teachers and motivators. I'll buy in to Charlie Weis when he wins and wins consistently. Until then, he's just another fat guy in a hoodie.

And I guess only idiots don't read all the posts in a thread before leaving a post of their own. Big Hoss wrote:And they did it even before the upset of West Virginia

This guy had some success in the NFL as a long-time assistant then as a head coach, and has continued to have success at Virginia, especially in recruiting:
The transition can be made.
