However you do make legitimate reference to the weakness of the Warrior O-Line that was totally exposed in the Sugar Bowl as it was to lesser degree in the OSU game in 2006.
In both games Colt Brennan was under extreme attack. However in the OSU game JJ did have a workable adjustment he could make. Nate Ilaoa a 5'9" 250 pound RB who rushed 131 times for 990 and 13 TD's in 2006. He was on the bench with a sprained ankle. In the second quarter JJ put Nate in the game and he alleviated most of the pressure rushing for close to 100 yards. Brennan went on to throw for 350 - 400 yards and three or four TD's. The Warriors were beaten by a single touchdown if I recall correctly, sorry I can't seem to access last years specifics.

My point both JJ and Colt knew what they needed but they did not have the Competitive O-Line or the likes of Nate Ilaoa. They both took their lumps without complaint or Blame in the press or blog, very professional.

Hawaii lost by *3* points to Oregon State. They had the ball to end the game but Colt was short on the 4th down pass (WR was wide open for the first down inside the 20-yard-line). Hawaii missed 2 field goals and dropped a TD pass. Colt threw an INT at the 1-yard line.
Does that game sound anything like the Georgia game?

Hawaii outgained Oregon State 504 to 316. The biggest irony of bringing up the Oregon State as a "failure" of Hawaii's OL is that this thread is about time of possession and Hawaii WON the time of possession battle in that game! Hawaii had the ball for 38:16 while Oregon State had the ball for 21:44. Hence, Hawaii DOMINATED the time of possession.

It is hard for me to conclude that the OL got "punked" in that game when Hawaii dominated time of possession, had 504 yards on offense, scored 32 points despite Nate Ilaoa being hurt and missing 2 FGs.

Nice piece of trivia for that game: Hawaii did not punt the entire game.

Garret great post and thank you for refreshing my memory on the OSU game. I do concur that the Warriors O-Line was not "Punked". However as I recall Ilaoa was not going to play that game. Only when it became necessity to aleviate pressure on Colt did JJ bring in Ilaoa. I seem to remember the first quarter a couple of sacks and a lot of rushes as the only time other than UGA that Colt was ever under pressure to that degree and obviously nothing like UGA.

My opologies if I offended anyone for directing my responses to secondary statements within this thread.

I was reacting to the statement: "The OL got punked by the OSU DL and Hawaii had better OTs in 2006." I disagree with that statement...I do NOT disagree with the statement about the Georgia game.

As I watched the game in 2006 I remember thinking that the UH OL had all types of problems in that game and that Colt was getting beat up by the DL. With time to review the game more objectively, I realize that the offense actually did pretty well in the game and Hawaii should have won if not for losing the turnover battle 2-0, missing FGs, and having Nate hurt.

I think the big problem for the Oregon State game is that Hawaii fans got spoiled with how well the OL played all year and the Oregon State game was a shock when their DL actually got to Colt repeatedly. But Hawaii moved the ball and had a lot of success...so I eventually concluded that I had just been spoiled by the OL play earlier this season.

The 2006 Hawaii OL was really, really good. The center and both tackles spent last season on NFL rosters. One guard in 2006 (Hercules Satele) was selected as first-team (they only select the first team) Football Writers Association of America All-America in 2007. The other guard was a freshman and played well in 2006, then started and did a great job as a sophomore center in 2007. That is why Hawaii fans were spoiled and Colt getting hit so much vs. Oregon State was a shock.

By the way, McKnight was the OL coach for the 2006 OL. He did a great job in 2007 with replacing 3 starters even though Hawaii's tackles were undersized and first-year starters. Hawaii's OL got a lot better in my opinion after McKnight got the job...though I think that coach Cav (who left Hawaii for Oregon State and is OL coach/assistant head coach) was probably the best OL coach Hawaii has had in my memory.

Hawaii couldn't handle a DL like Georgia's. But how many teams like Georgia does SMU play? Against C-USA level of competition the Hawaii OL dominated, giving the QBs all type of time to throw. Boise State's DE really got to Colt also, but I think Boise State was also ranked higher than any C-USA team.

I'm not offended and I don't think anyone has reacted that way to your post. You are correct that Nate came in and the game changed after that. Having a running/shovel pass threat at RB is critical for the offense when the opponent has a strong pass rush. Both RBs went to the NFL after 2006, and the newcomers at RB in 2007 did not get a threat going like Hawaii had in 2006.

After sitting out the first quarter, Nate Ilaoa entered the game and sparked the Warriors with 48 yards and a touchdown rushing and six receptions for 67 yards on shovel passes, including a 34-yard gain.

"My leg's kind of bugging me, but I just went ahead and played with it," Ilaoa said.

By the way, this was a game in which JJ used a tight end...FB Reagan Mauia lined up that way and was an extra blocker to start the game.

You guys have pretty much hashed it out already but I have to add that I totally agree with the fact that time of possesion can be misleading and a bit over rated. You have about 12 to 13 attempts or possessions in a game and to increase that to 14-15 with a R&S is the better way to increase the chances of gaining feild position advantageous to scoring. That's really not rocket science and a little bit of a "DUH!" statement! So, time of possession isn't as good as number of possessions.
