Thought someone with a surer memory would have told you who Kelsey was and I may get corerected. He was a C-LB from Corpus I think and perhaps in the last class recruited by Meek before Fry came in. That was in the one platoon days. He msde first team as a true soph and then died from a heat stroke in fall practice. Texas Football's comment had been that he "had the reactions" Fry wanted as a LB. I thought his picture was up somewhere around the campus, maybe in the Coliseum?
Kelsey may be right but the name just seems a little wrong. Kelso maybe? You are correct that someone not too far removed from when I came in '68 did die of heat stroke. Fry was very aware of the situation and we still had one very close call while I was there, although I do not recall the player's name.

Absolutely, the wrong way to address it. Working out in it accomplishes nothing. Our early games are in the evening. We have learned too much the hard way about the dangers of working out in the heat. This ain't the Junction Boys in 1952 where you took a salt tablet. You avoid the heat as much as possible. Think the practice schedule during the mornings is ideal.
It is hot everywhere in the South. LSU is practicing in heat with very high humidity. Arizona and Arizona State are practicing in a desert.
In Houston, Ft. Worth, Norman, Austin, and Dallas it is hot. There is no way around it., Practices can be held earlier in the day or later in the day to avoid the highest heat, but it will still be hot. And most of our opponents don't have indoor facilities. Heat in Texas (and the South) is the way it is. WE can adjust the timing of practices and have frequent water breaks but we will not be able to avoid the heat al together. The thing is, coaches have been holding two a days in August for some 40 years (remember, in the fifties the season didn't start until late Sept so practices in August were rare). Coaches, trainers and others are aware of the problems of the heat and how to best address it. It will not be fun (never is) but our players will survive it.
What is the hottest SMU game y'all have ever been to?
The game at Kyle field right after Katrina was pretty dang toasty.
I saw a corps guy crying that day - massive amounts of tears streaming because he was saying it was too hot. Wish I had a camera
sure he wasnt sweating out of his eyes it was so hot ![]() "There ain't nothing you can't solve with one more beer"
Opening Day at Ford Stadium, September 2, 2000. SMU v Kansas. I downed a LOT of Lemon Freezes that day!!! ![]() SMU v Ole Miss at Oxford, MS in 1997 is a close second for me.
I think it was about 107 the day of the Nite opener against Arkansas. Also the opening game at Ford against Kansas was well into the 100s but again a Nite game. The game at College Station was brutal because the sun was directly overhead during the mid afteroon game.
The frog game at the Cotton Bowl in '86 was the hottest for me. Of course I didn't really hydrate like I should have while I was there. Too much whiskey, not enough water.
No, he was crying and wailing like a little kid
