I agree, but last year we lost half of our games by a TD or less and many blamed Bennett.....saying a good coach would have won those games. Well, we spend $2 million to get that coach and what happens - we still lose the games.
as successful as jj was at hawaii, he now lacks one big thing that he grabbed in his first season at hawaii: momentum. where is his momentum going to come from here after this debacle season? We need to try to win next year and that means 7-8 jucos need to be signed in december. will jj/smu do it?
Oh how I wish Plano could have visited the Boneyard this year. I am a huge Burkhead fan. He and Marcus Stiggers are probably the most exciting high school players I have watched. Seriously don't tell me Bob Toledo or that no name from Rice could not have come in here and won 1 freakin game?!
Look, I am as disappointed about this season as anyone. It sucks to go out there and watch us lose games in which we had opportunities to win. But seriously, how many games did you think we'd win this season? Maybe 4? We didn't add the kind of players to drastically improve our defense, and that was the HUGE hole in our game last season.
How quickly we turn around and begin to eat our own. Disgusting. I heard this same kind of crap talk the entire first half from a guy sitting behind me in the stands, and it was all I could do not to turn around and tell him to shut the F up.
Re: Out Coached
Football 101, you try to establish a running game to keep defenses honest.
No sir - that is old school - if you play the run and shoot you establish the pass and then run the ball - especially against Memphis for gosh sakes -
Look - I think JJ gets it done here to - I just think this was not his staff's best game - and not his best game. Lots of mistakes by the coaching staff that could have won this game. He is not beyond criticism.
there really is no running the ball in the run and shoot
well that would be incorrect also. But you dont attempt a bunch of runs at the front of the game, thereby giving up field position and eventually spotting the other team 14 pts. That was just bad play calling.
We don't have great talent on D yet - but we served this one up on a platter by some bad decision making from the guys with the headsets.
Agreed. However, there's a difference in saying something like "we should have kicked that field goal when we had the chance because it would have put us in a better position to win this game" vs. "we're spending $2mm a year on a coach and this season is still completely lost". Did anyone really think that dropping that much cash on a big name coach would get us to a bowl game this year? If they did, they are delusional, or just ignorant. I never once thought we would pull a turnaround like he did at Hawaii. I would have loved to have been proven wrong, mind you. Obviously this is hard to watch, but if we had won 4 games this year, I would have been ecstatic. I had very low expectations this season. Now, if we don't start winning some of these kind of close games next year, then I'll have a problem with our choice in coaches.
I expected only three or four wins and this season will not meet my expectations.
This game was a coaching debacle. We actually had better talent for the first time this year. JJ will recover from his bad game. Hope he owns up to it. JJ was the right choice and I am optimistic long term - but this was so very painful to witness.
I don't know how you can have a game more poorly coached than the Navy game....on both sides of the ball.
Agreed, but we are definitely in the minority on this board with that opinion.
Say what you will about the cupboard being bare and this being a rebuilding year and all that. But there is mounting evidence that June Jones is not a good game day coach. He makes highly questionable decisions, especially in crunch time in the few games we have been competitive.
I'm getting the impression that June Jones is all about X's and O's (offensively, of course) and doesn't really care much for, or have an understanding of, game management and clock management. From what I've seen this season, his goal is to have an offense so good that there's no need for strategy or game management. Or defense, for that matter. And forget Justin Willis. Look at how well Logan Turner performed in a difficult situation - especially after being banished on the depth chart below two incoming freshmen. If Turner had been named the starter at the beginning of the season, as logic would dictate being as he was the only scholarship QB in the spring, this season might not have been the complete abomination it's turned into. Not that Turner is the savior or anything. Absolutely not. But he would have given the offense a chance to get some stability until Bo Levi was ready to take over at some point in the season. And not to knock Bo Levi, but I have yet to see why June Jones has such a man crush on him. Not that Bo Levi isn't good, but even accepting that he's a true freshman and isn't surrounded by a lot of experience or talent, I haven't seen whatever it is that June Jones sees in him. I keep looking for something that tells me he's special, but I haven't seen it yet. He's pretty good for a freshman who didn't go through spring, but I just haven't seen whatever it is that garners such devotion from June. Of course, I'm not a coach, either.
BLM has thrown 23 TDs this season, and if Sanders gets another like 30 yards or so in the next 2 games, we will have 2 receivers with over 1000 yards in a season for the first time in school history. Granted, he's made some bad decisions, too, given the number of INTs he has thrown. The kid's got some talent and maybe June thinks he's got the most upside of all the freshmen on our roster. If that's the case, then maybe June figures BLM might as well get some experience on the field as soon as possible to benefit us in the future. Don't know for sure, but just a thought.
On a different note, given our defensive play, it wouldn't matter who our QB was, we weren't going to do much better this season.
