In theory this is undoubtedly true, but would you bet on a white recipient, either this year or any year, to pick up the award honoring the first black scolarship player in the SWC? If it happens, I will be surprised.

It's an interesting conundrum which does nothing more than spark a debate to pass the time until football season gets here.

what if the award has more to do with overcoming adversity? theoretically then it could go to anyone, correct? it would still be honoring levias... and to make things even more interesting, if the award is only allowed for black players to honor levias, what if a player comes from interracial parents would they then be disqualified from the process?

major league baseball has no problem letting everyone honor jackie robinson

It seems in this world it isn't prejudice if it is negative towards white males.

That's because white males are not a minority.

And they are no longer a majority.

Yet white privilege still exists. This is very interesting...

Women are a majority yet they still are included with "minority" races in many discriminatory practices.

For example, in Dallas there is a quota on using "MWBE" services when the city hires out companies to perform services.

Business Development & Procurement Services
Minority/Women Business Enterprise (M/WBE)

Definition of an M/WBE
An M/WBE is a small business that is at least 51% owned and operated by a socially and economically disadvantaged person or persons.

Socially and Economically Disadvantaged means individuals who are citizens of the United States (or lawfully admitted permanent residents) and who are:

* African Americans
* Hispanic Americans
* Native Americans
* Asian Americans
* Women

Owned and operated means that at least 51% of the business is owned by one or more socially and economically disadvantaged individuals and that the management and daily business operations are controlled by the same socially and economically disadvantaged individuals.

Class is a far bigger issue than race in my opinion. Two equal candidates going for a job in the same clothes with equal grooming, I'm sure there are still people out there that would use race to choose one or the other. However, there are many, many, many more times when two people interview for a job, one from affluent background and one from a poor background, and the poor applicant will lose because he has never learned how to look and act the part.

Most people would hire a well dressed and well spoken black man over a white guy dressed like ghetto trash and talking like a rapper.

It is not a matter of majority, it is "protected class"' of which women as a whole are included. I deal with this for a living.

Yes, I already said that. You cannot have an award earmarked only for black players, nobody would stand for it in this day and age. If you did, whites would demand an award for whites, and down the slippery slope we'd all go.

I don't know why I thought about it, but as I was reading it this morning in the dead-tree version of the morning news, the whole can a white guy really get it thing just came to me. Maybe they'll surprise me right off the bat.

it will be interesting to see how they decide who gets it, and based on what criteria... my initial thought would be JWill for all he has gone through, and how he has worked his [deleted] off to stay with the team

If it is a coming-back-from-adversity type of award as you alluded to earlier, a candidate could be Hudman, who has apparently clawed his way out of Jones's doghouse. Won't mention that he is white for fear of beating the proverbial dead horse. However, my vote still goes to Willis, assuming he comes back from his injury.

Don't know why not.

No doubt Jerry LeVias showed character and strength, and had to reach down inside himself further than most of us will ever have to in our lives. Part of his story is also about those with character who considered him a teammate, competitor, friend, and human being.

No doubt, I have to say meeting him at the Distinguished Alumni Awards a couple years ago was one of my all time SMU highlights.

I bet Jerry LeVias was never suspended from the team.

The individual, who exemplifies him, his standards, and tenacity, should be the recipient of this fine award no matter the color of their skin.

I may be wrong but I do believe Chris Banjo has received the honour.
