Re: Beck CoulterAnother NCAA non-qualifier is Aron Franklin from Goliad - too bad b/c it sounds like he's a monster. Hopefully we'll get a lot of these guys in a year or two after they've seasoned a little bit at prep schools (the route I think Beck's taking) or JUCOs. Trinity's probably Trinity Valley JUCO. Yes, if they don't make it, their spots are re-opened (see Holyfield). Most good BCS teams (besides TX, OU, USC) play this game - those teams don't play that game too often b/c they don't have too, unless you're an incredibly good athlete, they don't need to take any risk.
Re: Beck Coulter
I'm going to guess that it's Trinity Valley out in Athens.

I thought KJ Vaifale was on a Mormon mission for a year and that's why he hasn't showed up. I remember seeing that on the board a few months ago "I love coaching here at SMU University" -June Jones
Re: Beck CoulterI can't say where I heard this (not because I cant, it's simply that I don't remember the source), but I seem to recall hearing that Coulter is a pretty smart kid, but that English is a second, third, or whatever language for him. That fact, combined with the fact that schools in the islands aren't exactly standout prep schools, meant that he might have to do a few things academically to get up to speed.

Have you heard what JC he might attend? "We will play man to man and we will pick you up at the airport." - Larry Brown

Re: Beck CoulterLast I heard was cautious optimism that he might not have to go the JUCO route. Since PonyPride hasn't reported him at any of the practices yet, my guess is that they're still waiting for summer grades or he has gone the prep or JUCO route.
Being that he's a freshman and hasn't practiced yet, I would think the likelihood of us seeing him play this year is getting remote. All pure speculation on my part though. "It's a couple hundred million dollars. I'm not losing sleep over it." -- David Miller
Re: Beck CoulterBeck Coulter receives scholarship offers from four U.S. colleges

Beck attends Leone High School in his final year and plays rugby 15s every Saturday for Nu’uuli in the American Samoa Rugby Union 15s rugby competition. [photo: Peri Perelini] Despite his absence from last year’s American Samoa High School Athletic Association (ASHSAA) football season, Leone High School senior, Beck Coulter says he’s received scholarship offers from four U.S. colleges, including Southern Methodist University, where former Warriors coach June Jones is in charge of the football program. Beck attends Leone High School and played high school football in the ASHSAA competition until last year, when he was not allowed to play due to his grades. His high school varsity team went straight to the finals in last year’s competition with a very strong performance. While his school mates Afasene Tasi, Robert Mikaele and Ilalio Sila were going head-to-head with the Fagaitua Vikings in the finals, Beck was focused on academics. His grades had previously suffered during the football season and he was not allowed to play in his last year by the school. During an interview with Samoa News he said: “The hardest part last year was telling my family and friends that I was going to play. I improved my grades like the school wanted in the first semester, but was not given the chance to play in the final round of the ASHSAA varsity football tournament.†Nevertheless, Beck, a standout athlete in whatever sport he’s playing — was approached by coaches from overseas colleges, including SMU in Texas, University of Hawaii at Manoa, San Jose State and Oregon to play for their college teams. He has not decided yet what college to attend, but he told Samoa News that UH would be ideal due to his many relatives and its proximity to Samoa. Many high schools and colleges now use education and good grades as an incentive to play sports. So you can be big and fast, but if you don’t produce the grades, you won’t even make the bench lineup. After picking up his grades in the first semester, it was too late in the season for a comeback so Beck sat out the most important season of his high school career. He is working hard to get his Grade Point Average (GPA) up. Beck normally plays middle linebacker for Leone High School. In his freshman year, he played quarterback. As a sophomore he played utility in many positions. He is an all-around athlete and plays softball, baseball and rugby. Currently, he plays rugby for Nu’uuli village in the American Samoa Rugby Union (ASRU) 15’s rugby tournament. He started the league playing for Nu’uuli’s second team, but due to his strong performance in busting tackles and bone crunching hits, he was immediately promoted to the first team as the team’s center. This position, center, is the same played by the famous Tana Umaga and Frank Bunce. What Beck, Frank and Tana have in common are size and big hits. Beck’s rugby experience in this year’s ASRU 15’s rugby tournament will go a long way in his college football career. Beck’s parents are Robert “Bob†Coulter and Tagilima Coulter. He has an older sister and brother, who is currently playing for San Jose State University as an offensive tackle. Through the trials Beck is thankful for the support his family has shown. Beck said: “My mom has been there ever since I’ve played football. If I go to college, I will try my best to return the favor. I also thank my dad Bob Coulter and everyone who has supported me [over] the years.†"It's a couple hundred million dollars. I'm not losing sleep over it." -- David Miller
Re: Beck CoulterI checked my old posts, and I posted this before back in July. Optimism, because he got a good SAT score. But English is a second language. His absence doesn't bode well for this season.

Re: Beck Coulteras has been mentioned in various threads (and by the Hawaii coaching staff) this young man is physiologically much more mature than his age dictates. He is currently the top junior athlete in American or Western Samoa, without question.

Re: Beck Coulter
He seems like a strong talent who could really help this team. But his absence doesn't mean we are doomed ![]()
Re: Beck CoulterI think the Beck Coulter situation goes down to the 11th hour so to speak. That is why all the media outlets are keeping this somewhat low key. I heard if he did go the JC route it might be the one in New Mexico.

Re: Beck CoulterIf you are talking about New Mexico Military Institute. I think that is a Prep School in which case we might be able to get him in by 2010. If he has a qualifying SAT and just needs a few credits this would be the better route.
