I guess you have a point. The difference is that you're a gambler and the coaching staff is playing the odds.
Most likely, what happens if you were OC is that we lose to Nevada, UTEP and Baylor by 20 instead of 3.
I assume what we're trying to do is 1) win, and 2) avoid a blowout by a bad team (i.e. Navy last year) – which would drive fans away, crush your players' esteem, and harm recruiting. This way, at least you keep it close and you keep in the game (not to mention keeping the fans in the seats) until the last gun.
IMHO.

Guys, you left out the Sun Belt Conference. We were part of this group that met in Denver Sunday. :whistling:

I'm as frustrated as anyone by our one dimensional offense, but I imagine a big part of Bennett's wanting to play a ball control game is because we have a serious lack of depth on the defensive side of the ball.
When we 1st reeturned from the death penalty with 41 frosh, we knew it was going to be '91 or '92 before we would have any chance of competing. Assuming Bennett and his staff can continue recruiting well, we aren't going to be ready to compete in the WAC or CUSA or wherever we miht be until 2005 or 2006. I'm just ready to see some improvement.

The difference now is that we must realize that a really poor defense against the run stuffed our running game. Another point is that Bartel had a passing eff. of 151.16 in the last game. That is a first this season to have a decent rating. Let's build on it. :thumbupcool:

Eggsactly what odds were those? We're 0-3 in close winable games. With NO offense a 0-0 tie is
the best we can hope for. With 9 points / game it doesn't increase the odds a whole lot.
May the forth be with us.

PK,
Not that it really matters, but at 24 points per game, Ohio State is ranked #74 in scoring.
Had we scored 24 points per game against our somewhat comparable competition, we would be 3-1 in those games (forget TTech and OSU).
For those of you attending this weeks’ game, how will you feel when Boise State scores their 2nd TD during the first quarter and you know darn well that we are incapable of 3 scores in an entire game?

Thanks SoCal. My info may be dated, or I have them confused with some other prominent school that was at 105 recently. Maybe someone who can access that data fairly easily can give us an idea who else is struggling with scoring besides us.

PK, I've said it before...You MUST have some kind of relationship with the coaching staff. If you're not one of them, then maybe it is MAN LOVE.
I don't get a chance to read or post often, but Nacho, you and others like you, are on the right track; you speak the truth. Don't let PK deter you from the TRUTH. Bad coaching and bad play calling are bringing this team down.
Don't tell me there is no talent, that's bs. You could have a dream team of Troy and Emmett in their prime, but if the Cowboys had handed off the ball to Emmett again and again and ran it up the middle, and not mixed it up a LITTLE - for God's Sake - what would you have had left?
I attended the San Jose game since I have family in the San Fran area, and it was atrocious. Can't say I've EVER seen a more predictably called college game. What's really sad is seeing the boys who GIVE THEIR ALL....Alan Adami, Townsend Hargis, who still seemed to be limping occasionally, Brian Bischoff, Don Stansbury, D. D. Lee, Sterling Harris ..... for what? To have the ball handed off to Keylon Kincade again and again? You've got how many injured players? Chris Godfrey, Jay Taylor, Brad Bean...and even Shan D. And again for what? For conservative play calling from the coaches, when they gave it their all at the risk of injury? By the way, if we were playing conservatively, why did we play Brad Bean at all? I am not a physician, but when you read a story about someone breaking his back after being thrown out the back window of a car just 6-7 months ago...was it worth it to play and re-injure him?
I was sitting there in the first two quarters racking my brain trying to come up with some plausible answers as to why the coaching staff wouldn't open it up a little more. And when they did in the 3rd quarter - LOOK WHAT happened!! PK, your theories about the ‘inevitable’ interceptions just don’t hold water. When they opened it up - guess what? We made 14 points! Incredible! Then we closed it down again in the 4th. Ooohhhh...seeing those wide open beautiful passes by Bartel was scary...can't do that too much. EEEEEEEE!!!!
I'd love to have the inside track on where the hell the rationale is in starting the game with handing the ball off to Kincade up the middle 9 times in a row. And then we STARTED passing to Kincade, too! You've got Hncir and other tight ends to TRY to throw to. And yes, by all means, keep throwing to this new Pellerin kid. That catch he made was BEAUTIFUL!!
But then 4th quarter what did we do? Go back to conservative play calling. I must be blind, cuz I don't get it, and neither did any of my other football lovin California family. Keep enlighting us, PK, with your wonderful insight.
p.s.
Re-read thread and realize that this post is as much for Peruna Punch as it is for PK.

Something to think about: With all the talk about Rossley's run and shoot, and how it was a better offensive scheme because it gave us a chance to score points.....I only saw one game while Rossley was coach, and it was a horrible loss to Missouri in the Cotton Bowl, but I do remember hearing alums talk about his offense, and all of them talked about how you could always count on him to run it up the middle, that was what he did 90% of the time, my memory of Cavan is similar, most of what he did seemed to be running it up the middle, a lot of times when the odds were long. Is Bennett really any different (would appreciate some stats supporting your belief so that I could use that with some of my distinguished older alumni friends)?
The donkey's name is Kiki.
On a side note, anybody need a patent attorney?
Good, Bad...I'm the one with the gun.

Sorry that I didn't get back to you earlier, but I had jury duty all day yesterday and although I dropped back by the office, I didn't have time to make a bunch of posts.
I do not have any relationship with the coaching staff nor do I engage in MAN LOVE. I have been to a number of functions where Bennett or one of his assistant coaches has been the speaker and I have come away from those functions believing he is the right coach at this time. I have chosen to support Bennett and his staff and you have chosen not to. So be it.
I have no insight as to why they are preparing the game plans the way they do, but I can promise you that Bennett and the team hate losing more than any of us do. They are all working hard to make winning happen and have come close in a number of games...San Jose not being one of them. The coaches work with this team every day and know better than any of us as to what their strengths and weaknesses are and I assume the game plans are based on that as well as what the other team presents in the way of opportunities and challenges.
I will repeat, I have chosen to support this coaching staff...you are of course free to do what you want. Rant away if it makes you feel better, but don't throw personal insults at those that don't agree with you. Thanks.
