Oh we have plenty of "cougars" in Houston. They hang out around Rice Village sometimes.

Yeah, they should be stoked to run out behind a docile "trained" horse with no do dads. I was telling my 20 something step-son about Peruna last night and he googled the name, and saw the stories about him and said, "that's one kick-a$$, mascot." His point was what other live animal mascot at any other school has a kill" to his credit. Check it out, not Ralphie, not Revelie, not BEVO, not Big Red, not Uga, not Traveller, not Misty, not Judge (but he came close when some Aggies tried to kidnap him). What other animal mascot has tried to mate with another animal mascot DURING the game? I still say the horse should be named "Madeline" cause he's a eunich.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

I agree. During my time on campus (05-09), when I heard the "why can't we have a real mustang" whine, I frequently pulled up Peruna's wikipedia to set the record straight. Peruna is one bada$$ mascot (much better than those sedated bears or a fat cow).

the players are stoked? Players don't care about crap like this, they roll with the traditions of the school and the game presentation, whatever it is. I'm sure they are all sittin around in their dorm rooms talking about the gelding. You know what this really is right? Somehow Coach Jones got behind this and because of that the players have to act like they give a s***. So ridiculous. I've never booed at an SMU game and would hardly think of it, but I am gonna be hard pressed not to boo when this presentation starts. Is Gary Cogill the master of ceremonies too? It would be appropriate cuz this feels like a surreal, bad movie.

In the end we are [deleted] about a horse 8-10 inches higher at its withers than what we have now.

I predict that as soon as the words "She ran calling Wild Fire...." are played there is a mad dash to commode to regurgitate.

That's the real [deleted] about this. In the end, the same people with no respect for tradition will still be complaining that we have a smaller horse than everyone else.

This whole thing is just [deleted] envy for schools with winning football.

If we had a dog mascot these same people would complain that it is not enough like the aggie mutt.

really? heres what you do then. quietly retire the current Peruna and install the new peruna which just happens to be a bit bigger. Don't have a political ceremony starring the wife of an absurdly rich oil and gas man. Don't have two mascots in the stadium at the same time (completely unstable) and don't spit on the traditions of the school in the whole process.

You seem to be implying there is not much difference...
well if there is not much difference then why screw with a 70+ year old tradition?

So June wants his team to run out behind a mustang. I have a feeling that we will screw this up and when the team comes out its going to look really stupid. Of course, we have a history of pre-game screw-ups when playing Navy. This might trump setting the grassy knoll on fire.

I have the exact same thought. But I must say, a gelding is a perfect metaphor of what the administration has done to the football team over the last 20 years. Let's hear that third down thunder.

Didn't Texas Tech lose a horse when it freaked out, bolted, and ran into a wall? Watch this horse get spooked by Peruna, run into BLM knocking him out of the game, and smash into a wall by the grassy knoll, traumatizing 1000 children and getting the disaster played on every news and sports show in the country.

Funny! Back when dirt was invented and I was a student at SMU, we all thought that the hand gesture was "two hoofs of a rearing mustang crashing on an opponent" it was only years latter it was described as "(shetland) pony ears").... bring back the Mustang and the crashing hoofs!
