Not if there are 5 7-win teams and Army pulls out an upset at Air Force or Navy. All the 7-win teams are guaranteed a bowl before a 6-win team could be taken. A lot of things would have to happen for the conference to play out that way, but this is SMU football. Far better to win 3 more games and guarantee a spot.

I don't know who said that, but I wouldn't start packing yet.

First, 6-6 teams are not available to be selected until all 7+ win teams from the conference have spots. Navy and the Big 12 will have no problem filling their spots in the Texas Bowl, and if Army can pull it out against either Air Force or Navy, they should reach eligibility and go to the Eagle Bank Bowl. That would leave CUSA with just 5 spots, and there could easily be 5 7+ win teams.

Second, the deal with the Hawaii Bowl gives ESPN extra weight in selecting the participants. Maybe JJ can make a good pitch to them, maybe not. But rest assured, if ESPN thinks that one of our conference mates is a better TV draw, they have no obligation to JJ. This year, ESPN picked up 4 games apiece for Tulsa and ECU - obviously ESPN thinks they are more marketable than us.

Third, I seem to remember hearing these same things in 2006 about bowl promises...

Let's not jump the gun guys.

for the Hawaii Bowl this year, they can pick any CUSA team they want that is bowl eligible. Number of wins is not a factor.

Wrong, they cannot pick a 6 win CUSA team if there are more 7 win CUSA teams than there are CUSA-affiliated bowls. That is an NCAA rule and Stallion and I have stated it over and over.

BUT, if Hawaii is able to pick SMU (either due to SMU getting 7 wins or due to there not being a proliferation of 7+ win CUSA teams), they will and SMU will accept. The exception is if SMU is invited to the Liberty Bowl

I think the chances of there being 6 Seven win teams went down yesterday with UTEP's loss. Most scenarios I've seen had UTEP with 7 wins. So I think the chances of a Hawaii Bowl bid went substantial up if we can get to 6. Where's that Bowl Calculation Tool that Smoo created.

Stallion--I was just playing around with that. It is still possible for there to be 5 7-win teams. It seems like a long shot though, as a lot of things would have to fall in place. Not sure that there could be 6 though--didn't find a scenario, but didn't run too many--but that of course assumes that Army does not upset Air Force or Navy.

It's the Liberty Bowl or the Hawaii Bowl.

Shouldn't be a done deal. How was that "deal" made?

Liberty bowl has the conference champ and the Hawaii Bowl has 2nd choice and wants JJ there.

OK why do you continually make that untrue statement when you've been presented with NCAA regulations that prove the statement is incorrect. You are misleading people-over and over-it is not true-it may turn out to be true - I'll even say now that it looks likely to be true but not as you state the facts. NCAA Bowl rules override Hawaii or June Jones' desire.

The Hawaii bowl does have 2nd choice.

yes they have 2nd choice to pick a school that qualifies under NCAA Bowl Rules which means that a conference must send all 7 win teams to a conference affiliated bowl BEFORE a 6-6 team can be selected. So if CUSA fulfills all its bowls with 7 win teams then SMU can not go to Hawaii Bowl with 6 wins unless an accomodation is made with an independent bowl or a bowl which can not fill its conference affiliated spots. I'll agree that with each week it appears less likely that CUSA will have enough 7 win teams for that to happen but it could and has happened on several occassions in the past. Here's for example one scenario in which SMU would be out of luck at 6-6 with 6 Seven win teams in a 6 or 5 bowl conference

Houston 10-2 6-2 3-2
East Carolina 8-4 6-2 5-0
Tulsa 8-4 6-2 3-2
Marshall 7-5 5-3 3-2
UCF 7-5 5-3 3-2
UTEP 7-5 6-2 5-0
SMU 6-6 5-3 3-2

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Southern Miss 5-7 3-5 2-3
UAB 4-8 3-5 1-4
Memphis 3-9 2-6 1-4
Tulane 3-9 1-7 1-4
Rice 0-12 0-8 0-5
