San Antonio Mustang wrote:I watched it on the Internet - bad picture and all. I state this disclaimer because I yield to anyone who was actually at the game. That said, my impression was that we lost today because young Bennie Thomas was beaten on some key plays and the offensive line with their injuries and lack of depth could not open holes and protect Padron. They ran all over us, but every team that has a good running game has run all over us. If Sterling had been there and if the OL was healthy we would have won. If Thomas had more experience we may have won. If we had more depth at OL we may have won. I just think it is the end of the season with too many injuries and not enough depth to win on the road against a good team. We are better than the past. We will beat Tulane and we will play in a bowl. If our opponent is a good running team we will have trouble.

Good post. This is pretty much the same thing I came away with. One more thing: We have got to get back to wrapping up and tackling. We were like swiss cheese on our run D. I knew we were going to lose the game half way through when we were getting sliced and diced when on D, then our offense would get the ball and either score too quickly or be forced to punt to quickly and then our D had to go back out there so quickly and get run on some more. I actually turned the game off about 11 minutes left in the 4th Q because it was getting ugly on D, and I couldn't bear to watch it anymore.

Let's not overlook this...

Today, we were physically (and by experience) overmatched. Still, June had us in a position to win the game late.

Very, very good things lie ahead. We're on our way.

We are beat up on defense, and Thomas paid the price for it on those throws.
But, what the coaches can do this week is point out the poor tackling. Wrap up and things won't be as out of control against Tulane.

It's interesting that everyone seems to be making excuses for WHY we played so ineptly.

I'm just trying to be honest. We played a bad game and we are not good enough. Hate to say it but it's true.

we were beaten physically as we have been most of this season. JJ is not just blowing smoke when he says we are finding ways to beat teams that are better than we are. I'm pleased that we are disappointed with a loss on the road at Marshall in only year 2 of JJ's tenure. I can't wait to see what these next 2 recruiting classes bring and to see what kind of team we are by the time Padron is a JR

And I'm thrilled the Ponies will be playing in a bowl game on my birthday.

Now let's beat Tulane to assure a winning record this season

Immediately after the last tick of the bowl game in Hawaii, we have several new offensive linemen, defensive backs, receivers, quaterbacks, et al that are eligible for next year. The program is building. We will begin to see real progress next year and the followng year we should (dare I say it jtstang) begin to have expectations. This year has been very unexpected from a wins stand pont. Not many if any expected to be where we are now and I for one am kind of glad to hear the disappointment because it only emphasizes the desire to improve from the fan base rather than the old "I give up" from the past. Looking at the overall year to date, you have to see that we won because of luck. Luck that was made by the players believing they could win and stepping up and making a play. Sometimes talent supercedes luck and that happened yesterday. But in 2 years, we will have talent and still have the ability to draw on luck when it comes into view.

I think that DB (Tim Crosby) plays better in a game time situation I remember him coming in on last year against USM and he did a good job. He can do a much better job defending the passing and he has about 4 or more inches on Thomas. We needed that last night. Thomas played his heart out and I'm greatful for that and it isn't his fault he was put in that predictament.

Agreed. Even after the loss, I still feel better about this team than I have any team since I arrived at SMU. They were outmatched yesterday, but kept on fighting even after Marshall scored their last TD and it looked pretty bleak. The onside kick goes the other way.....and we may very well have been in OT. Plus, we did it with no blocked kicks, getting no turnovers of any kind, and our lines getting owned on both sides of the ball.

This team has some fight in it. Let's face it. '97 against TCU was only shocking because TCU hadn't won a game all year. Rice in '06, quite frankly, I didn't expect us to win that one. I fully expect us to beat Tulane this week. Even if we end up in a dogfight. I like this team's chances at pulling off a victory.

I think we needed more than Crosby last night. We could have also used Stills, Nash and Young, but they did not attend Bennett's camp.

such being the case, I'm afraid we didn't want them anyway...

That is best since I do not think they treated their children well. Or was it their parents?

Since I don't know who those guys are, did they play for SMU and didn't go to camp, or are you saying Tim #35 didn't show up for camp?

Sorry Ms. Bell. I try not to get too serious about things I cannot control. Crosby,Nash, Stills and Young was a band from back in my days. And I am old.
