Re: Thank You Pony Fans For Your Input & SupportNice job David. I heard when you announced Sanders for breaking the receiving record and that was neat. Why didn't you announce when Shawnbrey got 1000 yards for the season? That would have been a special moment as well. Just curious.

we were wondering the same thing
Re: Thank You Pony Fans For Your Input & SupportIn regards to the milestone announcements, we get those directly from our bosses and are handed to us prior to when something they want announced is accomplished. The Sanders thing was handed to my spotter and when he reached the plateau given us, handed it to me to announce immediately.

Re: Thank You Pony Fans For Your Input & SupportThanks. I just wish they would have announced Shawnbrey as well, he deserved it.

Re: Thank You Pony Fans For Your Input & SupportI absolutely agree with you. But with all I have to shuffle and deal with and as hectic as it gets at times, we have to rely on our bosses to give us things that we are not going to be aware of. Shawnbrey is one classy individual and there is nothing but a fantastic future ahead of him.

Re: Thank You Pony Fans For Your Input & SupportI'd rather you announce none of the horses at all (like you did yesterday) than have you ever utter the names "Liberty" or "Justice" over the mic.
Re: Thank You Pony Fans For Your Input & Support
I notice you point to your bosses as having responsibility for a lot of the decisions that are made. I think you might have gone through this before, but could you share who your bosses are? I understand if you do not want to use names, which is fine with me. I am more interested in what their areas of responsibility are both during the game and otherwise, whether they have football/SMU backgrounds, etc.

Re: Thank You Pony Fans For Your Input & SupportI actually registered on this board to gripe about how abysmal the game presentation was vs. SFA. I'd lurked for years, but that was what got me so hot under the collar that I had to post.
Through a vacation and some business travel, Tulane was the only other game I had a chance to attend this year. The difference was amazing. No random broadcast of WRR over the speakers. You, as the PA announcer, had a clue what was going on. You encouraged the crowd to get involved, and they responded. Simply wonderful. Not perfect, but more improvement than could EVER have been expected in only one year. Unlike some, I have no real issue with the band being mic'ed, but it would be nice to put that mic on a slight delay, to try and even up the sound a bit. I know this is difficult, but you have a whole year to work on it, right? ![]() I was also looking for an announcement on Shawnbrey. Not your fault, just pass it on to the powers that be... he deserved recognition. Thanks for all the work you put in... it shows. Stallion doesn't think I'm a stinkin' genius anymore.
Re: Thank You Pony Fans For Your Input & SupportDavid,
Thanks for your hard work throughout the year. I think I would echo the feelings of most of the board in graditute in your reaching out to us for ideas. I hope our comments and ideas have been helpful and that you do return next year. The one moment I will remember most of all from this season (from a PA standpoint) was during the UTEP game when you came in loud and clear (and perfectly timed with a dead point in the game) and slowly drew out the upset score of the Houston High - UCF. Great response from not only the crowd, but the team as well.
Re: Thank You Pony Fans For Your Input & Support
Thanks for the kind words. I have to tell you, that being the new PA is a dream job for me. I got the job on one of those things where knowing the right people, being at the right place and at the right time was the only reason I am living my dream today. My relationship goes back to 1965 with SMU. I was in a rock band called "The Outcrowd" as their lead singer. Our lead guitar player was a student then at SMU. Our band use to play a lot of Frat parties. We played off and on through 1967 when I enlisted in the Air Force for 4 years. In 1986, I became friends with another SMU Alumni and his wife. For 24 years we have been the closest of friends. When he heard that the job was being auditioned for, he gave folks my name, I came and tried out..... and the rest, as they say, is history. My background is basically radio, that dates back to my three tours in Vietnam and my old AFVN days in Saigon. My screaming out rock songs for 3 years altered my voice somewhat, and what you hear is a major result of that. I have never been prouder to be a part of anything in my life than I am being a part of SMU. I sold my company a few years back.... got tired of the corporate world.... went through a divorce..... and at 61 and retired, have one job..... being the PA voice of the SMU Mustangs. It is a job I never take lightly and always strive to be better each and every time.... for that is the way I have approached everything I have ever done.... with much success. Each time I work, whether it is Football or Basketball.... I want to make it filled with enthusiasm and do the absolute best to build excitement for our athletes. Again, I feel blessed that the community has been supportive of me and given me encouragement which only makes me want to be even better. It may sound strange, but even at 61... I get so pumped up the night before a game it's hard for me to sleep and even more so on game day itself. On Football day, I arrive at the stadium 5 hours before kick-off. With Basketball, 2 hours. It isn't so much that I have lots to do, because I have already prepared my templates and notes the night before. I interact with the folks there... my bosses.... the fans..... the security people..... I absolutely want to soak up the moment forever. I never get nervous.... but absolutely get anxious for the teams to come out of the tunnels at Ford and Moody..... so that I can make it the best possible experience for them, the fans and myself. I will be back next year if my SMU bosses so choose. I have given them my commitment that I want to do this until either my voice gives out or they have to pry my microphone out of my cold dead hands. SMU is now a huge part of me. You are my family. I will always endeavor to be the best I possibly can be, to listen and learn...... and to constantly conduct myself with class and honor. Again... thanks to all of you for your continued best wishes and support. David ![]()

Re: Thank You Pony Fans For Your Input & SupportGreat work David. The rest of the game presentation's light years ahead of where it was at the beginning of the season. Thanks for your diligence and commitment.
