Locally and Regionally..FMC has been VERY connected to SMU over the years..seems like 3-4 "area" Ford dealers went to SMU...

Whatever happened to the son of the Ford dealer who in the 1980s used to advertise in the Football Program who begged to buy from him so "my son doesn't grow up to be an Aggie"
"With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris

When the Mustang was introduced in 1964 Hayden Frye and the entire coaching staff was outfitted with red over blue Ford Mustangs. When you drove by Moody you could see 8 Mustangs parked in a row on the east side adjacent to the football offices. My recollection was that these vehicles were provided by a local Ford dealer in concert with the Ford Motor Company. I cannot recall how many years the coaching staff was provided with new Mustangs every year, but it lasted for a period of years. I also recall that the Mustang was named by Ford in honor of SMU. Legend, at that time, was that there were several SMU students who were the children of Ford executives. These students recommended to their parents and the idea and the rest is history. I also seem to recall that a Ford executive confirmed this to Hayden Frye in the locker room after a valiant effort fell short in a 1964 loss to ultimate national champion Ohio State in Columbus. My recollection, with out looking it up, was that we threw 60 plus passes in that game, doubled OSU's offense; however, had 4 passes intercepted in the OSU end zone dooming our bid for an upset. OSU's defense featured several All-Ameicans; however, Big Ten teams were purely run oriented in those days and this was one of the first games in which a Big Ten team had ever faced a desperate passing attack and they were very fortunate to win. The Ford executive reportedly indicated they liked the spirit of the wild Mustang and SMU's performance that date exemplified this wild and unbridled spirit.
