Since our #1 RB had better things to do, it makes me think about how our RB position will shape up in 2010.
The RBs we will have include :Zach Line, Bryce Lunday, Chris Butler, and BJ Lee. 2010 RB commits are Darryl Fields and Kevin Pope.
So with McNeal making his choice, how do you think the RB position shapes up next year?
Thanks.
Shawnbrey wanted to be a Mustang that why he selected SMU and help us to our first bowl in 25 years. His job is done and he has moved on, I wish him well. The tone of your message is somewhat condescending toward one of of former players who will always be remembered for his positive contribution to the team. That was not called for.

Thank you Stallion. I must admit I'm a little angry he is leaving. I graduated from SMU and my family wasn't rich. But I worked hard and studied hard. If McNeal had wanted to be a Mustang he would have done what it took. As it is, I feel like he is quitting on all of us. The truth is that if he had stayed in 2010, his stock would most likely be alot higher. But he made his choice, just like I made mine back when. Thats why I started this thread. Basically... he's gone... let's focus on the players that want to be Mustangs.
Did you also have an ailing mother and a little child that you had to provide for? Shawnbrey deserves nothing but our gratitude for coming in and helping us achieve the bowl this year. I am looking forward to watching him on sundays, god willing. On the topic, my money is on Fields/Butler coming up. We may not have the 1000 yard rusher but neither did any of those JJ Hawaii teams.

Butler has had a few nagging injuries the last two years that have affected his abilities. But as noted, with a better O line and Padron, and if Butler is healthy, he will be very good for us. Not so much "pudgy" as he is thick. Good enough speed to run back kickoffs. Hopefully knowing he has the best chance to "be the man", his offseason effort will be tremendous.

Our "starting" running back last year is returning. He did an admirable job for the situations in which he was asked to perform. Lundy has had an additional year of work. Butler has shown glimpses of talent, and Fields is extemely talented but he will not know the offense in the summer like he needs to. We will be ok. I do not think we are going to have to play with just 10 players. The coaches will find someone to put in the RB position. Zach Line seems to me to be more of a Jones type of back who can both block and run. Padron will probably be passing a little more this year which will need the blocking help and will also open up the run more which will allow Line to perform a little higher level than last year. I would have loved to have Shawbray back and he is an exceptional talent, but we will not have to start punting on 2nd down because he is gone.

I seem to remember talking about Jeremy Johnson as a RB option. He is the recruit JJ talks about when he says they have 3 RB's committed.

I am glad you worked and studied hard and graduated from SMU. But did you come from south Dallas and get prepared for college at DISD James Madison HS. I doubt very seriously that McNeal had the same academic advantages and was provided the same college success tools that you were given in HS. There is no first hand info on this board that McNeal did not give it his best effort to succeed academically. From what JJ has said it appears that McNeal would have had a very difficult time in succeeding academically while also playing football. If he had returned, he would not have practiced this spring and would have had to also go to summer school just to have a chance at being eligible. Based on JJ track record, I believe if McNeal had not tried , he would not have played.

I have to agree with me@smu. Besides, most jocks at the 'U' do not have to study-they seem to get passing grades automatically.

Your assumption that he didn't try hard enough in the classroom is predicated on your assumption that he had the ability to pass

Yeah that is EXACTLY what I'm saying. I'm saying he didn't make much of an effort if all he could do was pass two courses. From all the inside sources I've read he never had an intention to meet his academic requirements. How come we let Shawnbrey off the hook -we have 85 players we expect to meet NCAA progression toward a degree standards-and certainly not going to laud a guy who got NFLitis because he had one good season. Wow 1100 in 13 games and averaged a whole 5 yards per carry in CUSA -Go directly to the NFL-you've proven all you can in the college game.

"inside sources" you "read" regarding SMU football? Doesn't sound inside to me. Hey, if you're right that he didn't try in the classroom, I'm with you. That's not what I heard from good sources

if so, I feel a whole lot better about whatever the situation is at RB. If JJ feels he can do this without jeopardizing the 'O', that's good news
