Always been a rule at Ford, BUT I sat under my umbrella the WHOLE SMU vs Nevada WAC game in 200? For a few minutes during halftime I counted all of the people in the stadium. Was anyone else at this sparsely attended game?
Was that the game the Nevada helmet was stolen?
Yes it was, still a classic moment, except probably for the student who did it, he got roughed up pretty bad. Ford has always had the no umbrella policy, although I have never seen it enforced. Of course the reason for the rule is so you do not block the view of the people behind you, but when it rains during an SMU home game, the fans left in the stands can pretty much have rows and sections to themselves, so really no need to enforce it.
Probaly won't happen...BUT...maybe it will!!

I only remember one very wet cold and rainy day at Ford under Bennett. Maybe a Rice game?
Surely the yellow jacket idiots would not take your umbrella away. There should be plenty of room to sit in an area so you don't obstruct the view of someone behind you.
But it will be dry anyway. Think positive! - the weather bozos are always wrong.

every rainy game should be an opportunity for SMU to sell hundreds, if not thousands, of disposable panchos. Have we figured that our yet?

One of the best memories I have of the PB era. The best part was that he made it out to the field with the Nevada kickoff unit as well.
I was at that game as well, but to be honest didn't stay in my seats, but took advantage of the heated and covered "Mustang Club" enclosure on the south end zone by that point of the game.

You should never bring an umbrella to any game.
I was at an Arkansas game once when it was raining. The stadium had a no-umbrella policy, too. Every fan packed into a sold-out stadium had on a red poncho. Their fans "got it."
Everyone had a clear view of the game and no one got poked in the eye by someone's umbrella.

I saw quite a few people that had umbrellas at the game.

Apparently (and sadly) the "no umbrella" policy is not enforced.

I heard you can bring them in but security is supposed to enforce not opening them until you leave to walk to your car. I'm guessing they didn't enforce it at 5:30 since there was plenty of seats avail.

who cares? there weren't enough people to obstruct any lines of sigh anyway...let's complain about this when it's ACTUALLY and issue...maybe the security chief recognized these things?
