Do not see the point in this topic whatsoever. Must be a slow day at the fort for the general.

When someone is too comfortable, it builds complacency. I hope that's not what happens here with the current setup.

Maybe so, but he stays as long as he wants.

How soon we forget the last 25+ years. Coach Jones stays as long as he wants - Unless we tank for the rest of his stay or a scandal occurs, he will be here. Gen'l, rest assured that he won't stay too long (he goes where he wants and at this point when he wants), my guess is another 5 years.

Dumb question, but I'll play along.

Ehhhh........

Maybe. Jones obviously has plenty of options right now. Nobody is going to dispute that.

But the more he wins, the more he proves the potential of this program. Keep in mind, there are coaches out there who coached themselves out of job: Bobby Bowden, Jeff Bower, maybe Houston Nutt, guys who raised the level of expectations of the alumni who became convinced that they were entitled to a certain level of success. I'm sure there are people here who believe we should be a bowl team every year now.

$2M/year, which is more than some NFL coaches make, is going to get somebody's attention. So do modern, upgraded facilities, and more reasonable recruiting standards. The fact that we pulled JJ away from Hawaii shows we have potential.

So I don't know. Like I said, its kind of a dumb question.

But let me put it another way:

June Jones coaching career from here on out is tied at the hip to SMU's success. Win a conference championship here, and somebody will come after him. Lose, his star fades while we go on to the next guy.

we play in a Division with UTEP, Rice, Tulane, Tulsa, and a decent UH program. Nobody has our facilities, campus, location or financial strength. We have lowered our academic standards to be competitive with all our opponents. The foundation has been solidly laid for about 3 years. CUSA gets at least 6 bowls. Of course, we should go to a Bowl Game just about every year with Jone and then after he leaves. This is a very good job now in a very weak conference. UH is the only team that should ever compete with us as far as recruiting is concerned.

However, you have said many times he's not on track with where you think he should be in terms of recruiting. Seems like Tulsa is just as good as Houston in terms of recruiting.

I really have not made that conclusion about the present recruiting class. I've concluded that this team composed of the last 4-5 classes really doesn't have the talent to compete for championships and the better teams on our schedule. We don't and haven't. Make a list of the teams we have beaten over the last 2 years. Most of those teams are not overly talented with a history of strong recruiting classes-in fact they were almost all mediocre. The exception was ECU last year-a team we beat with about 17 special team points and statiscally beat us pretty good. Great victory but it really doesn't disprove my point. There is no excuse for SMU under present admission standards to get outrecruited by Tulane, Rice, UTEP or even Tulsa.

Leopold, this was a statement. I asked people what they thought.

So thanks for not paying attention.

Your post was stupid. You want to throw out a kerosene bomb thread title then at least have a strong point of view supporting the theme of the thread and solidly support it with with backup facts.

Anybody can throw out thread titles like"

Should SMU Drop Down to Division II?

Has the Game passed June Jones By?

Hell I respect the guy that threw that one out more than you because at least he tried to make a point and made an argument based upon his perception of facts. His point was pretty well exposed as ridiculous but at least he has an opinion. What was your point?

Do you agree or disagree.

Don't care if there isn't a question mark there - that's a question.

Kind of like saying 'you asked people what they thought.' That's saying you asked a question.

Whatever. Don't care. It's a dumb statement, General.

Agree- not the best topic to discuss. However, it is true. If we didn't have JJ who would we have and would we have made the progress that we have made?

GO PONIES!!!
