What an idiot. He is obviously biased but also underinformed. The SWC in the late seventies and early eighties was probably the strongest conference in the US. TU, A&M, Arkansas(coached by one of the best coaches in the US at that time), UH and Baylor and even TCU were loaded with good athletes. Those teams showed up regularly in the top twenty and were constantly sending players to the NFL. I believe the 82 SMU team had 18 players who played some kind of pro football and A&M may have had even more. Fujak, (or what ever his name is) is an example of the kind of sportswriter that cost SMU the National Championship for 1982.
It was no accident that all those teams above had fine athletes. It was rare in those days for a top player in Texas high school to go outside the state,(except possibly to OU). The pay scale was too high in state.
