I wish I could forget Phil Bennett's time here.

Oregon ran the swinging gate but they did not score from it. They shifted into the normal formation and then ran a fake.

Yes. But didn't Phil do the same thing? I know on PATs they would start from it and shift. I can't remember a 2-point attempt coming from it.

The bottom line on Phil Bennett IMO:
Bad Head Coach
Good defensive coordinator

And that's OK.

The swinging gate is designed so if the defense does not line up accordingly you can direct snap to a designated player and run the extra point (or pass if that be the design). The only tine I remember it actually being used by Bennett (that is an actual play from the SG formation) was I believe a game against Nevada. They actually had lined up ok against the formation but we tried to score from the spreadout formation anyway, and failed. I believe we subsequently lost by 1 point.

That was extremely painful to watch.

You have a better memory than me. I forgot how we scored our TDs against Army.

From a distance my own take on PB was - and this agrees with much previous comment - that he was a good DC and no long term head coach. I'd say also that his ability to recruit or help recruit was more related to the viability of the program he served rather than being something he could affect.

He had a decent recruiting year and then it went downhill. Probably in direct proportion to wins and losses. He like many of our coaches was handicapped by our academic side, and he had a good eye for talent. Justin Willis, Emmanuel Sanders, and heck even Richard Bartels all were kids he recruited. Our defenses never were athletic enough to run his defenses. Remember some of those Tulsa and Houston games which got into the high 30s and 40s and we couldn't stop anyone.

PB is a Mr Nice Guy to the public, but he was a screaming madman to the SMU football players. His SMU teams wouldn't play for him and that is why we always lost the close games.
