Then you were obviously over paid...trinkets and beads had much lower value.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Yes, but mrydel could get a much higher value for the tinkets and beads when he took them back to Ark. :P He could trade them for sheep which he then sold to aggies and hence he became a famous banker.

This article is idiotic. How is it any less wrong, just because you can technically make an argument for paying "student"-athletes?

They broke the clearly defined rules of the NCAA. And very egregiously I might add.

But on the other topic of paying players, like everyone else has already pointed out, it is too slippery of a slope. Let's not forget these players are getting paid something - tuition and small stipend - already. The issue is, and will always be, players getting unfair, under the table benefits that alter his recruiting process.

also, while on this topic, I wonder if the government would ever bother getting involved with these cases so that the boosters providing these illegal services would be prosecuted. Would seem to make sense to punish both parties here - although I realize these are NCAA rules that are being violated, not federal laws.

plenty of states have these laws. Practically no State Attorney General wants shine the spotlight on alleged cheating involving a State University. There would be a lot of political pressure to simply move on in fear of exposing more cheating.

This is what happens to programs who try to claim that they're the U when that designation really belongs to the program that proudly wears the Maroon and Gold.

Wonder if the IRS decided to prosecute a few tax evasion cases against former athletes that would create some incentive on the part of the athletes to steer away from improper payments. Wishful thinking at best I assume.

Seems like the Michigan Fab Five had an income tax issue back in the day for the benefits they received while at Michigan. Could have been something else though.
