Re: Facts on Possible Stadium ExpansionGood points about the end zone seating issues. I like the idea of decking the other side, and think if we are going to expand lets not do it just part way -- lets go for more than 45,000 if possible.
Just posted this to let you guys know they have had expansion plans for years and that was part of the discussion when the stadium first built. Would be nice to see it finally happen.
Facts on Possible Stadium Expansion
Seriously - why are you over here?
Re: Facts on Possible Stadium Expansion
The funny thing is that June just did an interview on Rivals radio and he stated that the stadium could be expanded to 65-70k. Ponyfans.com voice of reason
Re: Facts on Possible Stadium ExpansionLook, the average attendance thing is skewed down by our small stadium capacity, which is further skewed By our visiting teams (see our home schedule).
If perhaps we already had a 45k stadium, then on good sch years we would break 32k to perhaps a sellout here and there (opening day, tech, Tcu, osu?), increasing our average. But We are basically capped on Good Games to 32 plus SRO. Second, our sch brings no one. Look at Average aggie attendance at Kyle for their games vs fau, shsu, etc. They often come up much shorter than a sell out. Same for tech. If we played in b12 our attendance grows exponentially. Now add that perhaps 1/3 to 2/5 of our seats are end zone. Even in potential sell out situations, 33%-40% of the people attending would have to make a choice to sit in end zone or stay home and watch on tv. Whereas, Boise State only seats 30, but almost all are between the 10s. I know it's apples to oranges with small town Boise w top team, vs big d and unranked team, but my point is that theres more value to the sideline seats. And even if we go to 42-45, the majority of seats will be end zone ish. (beyond the goal line).
Re: Facts on Possible Stadium ExpansionAnd We Dont need an 80k stadium.
If We were in the sec, lsu/bama et al would have an easier time getting tickets to an smu game than a fla or aub game. Stadium size is an overblown non-requirement for big conf affiliation. Means nothing.
Re: Facts on Possible Stadium Expansion
Don't you know by now that June is "the exaggerator" about everything?
Re: Facts on Possible Stadium Expansionhe's just optimistic.

Re: Facts on Possible Stadium ExpansionI remember in his interviews before the Hawai'i Bowl he was saying it cost 60K a semester to go to school here.
If it came down to it, I could see SMU twisting UP's arm in order to get around the zoning and height restrictions. Besides, we were here first and have been helping to boost property values for a century.
Re: Facts on Possible Stadium ExpansionIf he meant 60k for a year that's not too far off is it, all things considered (tuition, books, rent, Green Elephant)?
Re: Facts on Possible Stadium ExpansionI remember it being a June-ism, like when he gave some incredible number for what security for the Olympics would cost when he was pushing for Hawai'i to get it since it's an island, which I guess means it's easier and cheaper to protect. I think he said per semester.
Re: Facts on Possible Stadium ExpansionI really don't see how the east end of the stadium could be decked. Seems tough to me...would you knock out bookstore, La Madeliene, Airline Rd, and then have to reconfigure the new dorms being built behind them?
If we have to expand, bowl it in at 45k. I cant imagine we'd ever need more than that.
Re: Facts on Possible Stadium Expansion
You don't have to go out that much to add an upper deck. A portion of it could be built over a part of the lower seating area like the upper deck in the end zone of this stadium. ![]() Then depending on how many rows you want to go up would determine how far out you had to go. The slope could be steeper thus further reducing the distance out you have to go east. You could probably design it to canterlever out over Airline Road and use some of the air space above the street. That might be a pretty interesting deal. Eventually the existing shopping area is going to be redesigned anyway so that could happen now. Filling in the open end of the horse shoe is just building low value seats whereas an upper deck between the goal lines is building premium seating. SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Re: Facts on Possible Stadium Expansion
Really? Wow! Why not an expansion to 100k? With SMU's average attendance being around 18,000-19,000, consider how easy it would be to find a decent seat. Highland Park height regulations be damned. ![]()
Re: Facts on Possible Stadium ExpansionYea, why not- we could call it the 'shoe II'.
