Re: DMN: Big XII now considering Air Force
Done. All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand
Re: DMN: Big XII now considering Air Force
National appeal, huge fan base compared to SMU. Who does MWC go after if they leave?
Re: DMN: Big XII now considering Air ForceI think we just need to kick the door in and it starts on Sunday evening. Let's beat the Aggies and run the table, then the BXII will look incredibly stupid taking another team. We can do this, this is the year, let's prove it on the field and forget about the rest. Personally, this gives JJ the best pregame speech ever, everyone says we don't belong on the field with these guys, they say we are weak, let's prove them wrong. I know we have it, you know we have it, now let's do it. With that a few Aggie d-linemen might find themselves on their tails.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
Re: DMN: Big XII now considering Air ForceIt may be in our best interest that the Big XII stay together even if it is without SMU for some time. Without expansion in the form of BYU or AFA or another school, the Big 12 is vulnerable. If UT, TT, OU & OSU leave for the Pac 12/Big 10/or some other option (Independent) the conference membership would sit at 5 and would likely fold. The Big East might grab Kansas, Missouri, Baylor as replacements. This would likely solidify the Big East and ensure their survival as the 5th major conference and would possibly enable them to survive the potential for raids from the ACC & Big 10. In a contest for survival between a gutted Big 12 and a gutted Big East, the Big East would likely win because of its basketball presence.
The survival of both the Big 12 and the Big East as major conferences (not necessarily AQ) is the best option for SMU because if further expansion by the Big 10, SEC, Pac 10, ACC occurs then we would have twice the odds of gaining entrance to one of those two major conferences as a replacement for one of the lost members. Granted, AQ status would not be ensured but would be more likely than in Conference USA.
Re: DMN: Big XII now considering Air ForceWould Air Force want to be in the big 12? Yes the get more exposure, but if you are getting your tail kicked by TX, OU, Tech, Okie State, is that good for your brand? And by brand, I'm not talking football or football recruits. I'm talking about the REAL recruiting for the air force.
Re: DMN: Big XII now considering Air Forcewe're just gonna have to beat the Aggies. I love the Air Force Academy, its really a neat place and American institution, but its a weak sauce addition to the Big12. They can never compete in a serious way no matter what. They don't deliver any Denver market either, the Springs is 50 miles south of downtown.

Bingo, we have a winner! Pony Up
Re: DMN: Big XII now considering Air Force
Agreed. This is why I dislike UT much more than TCU or Baylor. "We will play man to man and we will pick you up at the airport." - Larry Brown

Re: DMN: Big XII now considering Air Force
I think you're dead-on with this point. The reality is we can talk, debate, and prognosticate and attempt to influence all we want on this board and in the media, but none of it means a damned thing and none of it is under our control. The only thing SMU can control right now is how we perform on the field, and all the talk about how we don't belong with the "big boys" is perfect bulletin board fodder for a team that is pissed they lost their bowl game last year and looking to prove themselves. Once they do that, I think we'll all be amazed and how many people's tunes change overnight. Let's put realignment aside for a bit and focus on beating the Aggies! GO MUSTANGS!!!!
Re: DMN: Big XII now considering Air ForceAFA has a national appeal; our local paper here gives extensive coverage to ACC, SEC and to the acadamies. It's all about TV numbers and renegotiating those contracts. In a 9 member conference minus A&M, the Big XII loses some negotiating power. Sorry, but we can't get that back for the Big XII. Dallas is already interested because of UT.
Re: DMN: Big XII now considering Air ForceIMO- we deliver Dallas to the TV networks just as well as cougar high does Houston or the lily pad jc does Ft Worth.
GO PONIES!!!
