I've talked to people involved with the design process. Ford was designed with closing the horseshoe in mind but they don't remember provisions for putting a deck up. Of course when you do a dozen stadiums a year they run together I'm sure.

It is always better to have a stadium/arena that is "slightly" undersized than it is to have an oversized building. Until SMU is consistently selling out, keep it the same size. When the building is consistently full, don't build anymore endzone seats.

I saved them on my computer, but it won't let me attach a PDF to this post. Any suggestions?

awesome! where you able to figure it out? I will send you a private messege.

I think everyone agrees that a consistantly full stadium is ideal. I believe there are probably alot of other factors that go into the decision to expand... these are some of my guesses:

1. need / demand / selling out
2. conference requirements or expectations
3. rival facilities
4. growth potential / marketing
5. whoever has the $$$ and what they want to do with it

SMUfrat- I emailed them to you. See if you can figure out how to post here, I'm too lazy/dumb to do it

Honestly, the only way an expanded stadium will ever be feasible is if we move to a conference with powerhouse programs that travel very well- so the Big 12 or SEC. 32,000 seats, with ~40,000 SMU alumni (I think) living in Dallas, is certainly enough for our purposes. There was an interesting quote from Robert Griffin III recently, about the loudest stadium he played at in college- he said it wasn't always the biggest stadiums, but the smaller, compact stadiums that were packed full. I think he said UConn was the loudest stadium he played at. I imagine that will change in early September when he visits the Superdome, though.

My understanding is that when the stadium was originally designed the structural engineering specifications took into account enclosing the Mockingbird open end and upper decks on both sides. I am not aware of any fully developed specific designs beyond the in-place structural engineering which would accomodate the additions.

I live in Hartford and uconn's stadium isn't loud. It's an open design that reminds me of a bigger version Plano's John Clark stadium with end zone seating. I can't wait to see SMU play there.

Why would we expand it? So we have a lot more empty sections? It's always funny how when people are young they have romantic outlooks on life and don't really understand reality. The reality is our attendance is terrible and will never get better. Our students aren't from Texas. They don't care
