That's the spirit! Give us the old guy who "pencils in" losses.........

don't know how my comment could be viewed as a defeatist attitude...?

In no way did I advocate for June Jones.

I would just rather have a coach that I know will be at SMU for at least 3-5 years.

Petrino held both of his college jobs for 4 seasons apiece. If he had immediate success here he'd probably head out the door very quickly but you could say the same about anyone else.

Hahaha, ok.

Yeah, he's 75-26 in college and has won big at each school he's coached at, TOM COUGHLIN called him the best playcaller he's even seen, but don't support him or SMU football if we got him because he sucked when he coached your NFL team? Steve Spurrier sucked for the Redskins, but I'd take him here in a heartbeat.

Yes, I am bitter, I don't hide that at all, but the dude has a track record of leaving jobs. I would not touch him with a ten foot pole. I admit the guy can call plays, but I'd be willing to be my entire life savings that if he came to SMU he would not stay longer than a year.

He will leave WKU this year if he has any success. He's always looking for the next job.

Trends of Leaving:
2003: First Year at Louisville - met with Auburn boosters
2004: Interviewed with ND, UF and Ole Miss, then said ""I want to make it clear that I'm not interested in any other coaching jobs, and am happy at the University of Louisville."
Then in December he interviewed at LSU
2005: Interviewed with da Raiders
2006: Signed a 10-year contract worth up to $25 million and 5 months later he went to the Falcons. 5 months after taking over the Falcons he took the job at Arkansas.

This article from Pat Forde sums it up:

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/ ... ortCat=ncf

So hiring a guy with a 41-9 college record will get the blood pumping. But those Arkansas fans ready to embrace their new hotshot coach and his pretty ball plays need to understand one thing:

The disingenuous drifter doesn't love you or any other fan base. He doesn't love any school or any NFL franchise. He loves himself, his playbook and his bank account.

That's it. Don't expect it to change.

Bobby Petrino will return your embrace, Hog fans. But while he's hugging you he'll be looking over your shoulder, scanning the terrain for his next hook-up.

Even in a profession rife with dishonest posturing, Petrino is singularly mercenary. Loyalty, allegiance, commitment and honesty are foreign concepts to him. It must be a sad existence.

Write a big buyout into his contract. Problem solved.

If he does well here and gets a better offer and leaves, we get paid.

When JJ leaves, we can't be skiddish about hiring a coach just because we're afraid he'll leave for another job. Same thing happened to TCU and Boise State, and they turned out alright afterwards. Our position in the college football pecking order doesn't allow us the luxury of believing this is a destination job.

My thought as well.

JJ has been the Mustang Moses. He led us out of captivity, but we're still wandering in a desert filled with embarrassing loses and minor bowls.

Screeeeeeeeeech. What? Did I miss something? Sorry, I was busy busting a 3 year old who still can't spell worth a damn. Oh well, I will try to be on duty here next time. 8)

So it would be better to have a coach who didn't get SMU back to the ranks of bowl teams and win enough to draw interest from other teams?
Of course, that coach has already been at SMU for 5 years ...

Petrino would be a great hire and you keep him a while with a big buyout. Arkansas had an $18 million buyout and really wanted to stay at Arkansas and then he lost everything by being stupid. He will be back and he will be back in the big time college ranks. I figure he will have one stop between where he is now and his next big time job. No reason that could not be us. He would get us moving forward, good recruiting, great play calling and then good money when he is bought out. I would take him all day long.

He was being talked about locally here yesterday. They figure at least 5 more years before the big guys will take a chance on him but I think it may be a little sooner. I believe we could be a great stepping stone for him. A good buy out contract would keep him for 3 years of a 5 year contract at least.

I understand people's feelings about wanting to win, I just want to know why we can't have both; someone who can both take us to the next level AND keep it in his pants. Forde's article pretty much predicted it, even without the motorcycle-employee angle - hes not another Larry Brown, hes a Dave Bliss, wighout the murder investigation. Besides, if you wanted a steppingstone coach that's what everybody sees in Jones, especially considering his pre-SMU record.

To be sure: I'll absolutely support SMU if they were to hire him, but don't be surprised if, as soon as we start winning, he pulls another bone-headed move, further bringing up the whole you-know-what.

Several things to consider:

Only two or three coaches have been wed to their schools--I can think of a only a couple: Bobby Bowden, Joe Pa, Royal, and the Bear (of course he left A&M). No coach is wed to a school or it's alumni, because no school is wed to them. Except for Brown, they are wed to their staffs, but no one else save for their wives.

Every coach "pencil's" in wins and losses as he prepares for a season and personally marks the progress of his team--get over it! JJ hasn't done anything that any other coach does, save for discuss it openly. Some of you people act like children when they learn Santa doesn't exist!

Turner is supposed to leave at the same time June will probably retire, so Mr. "Anti/Athletics/Switch and Bait", should be gone unless his excessive ego forces him to stay. If he is here, we would be lucky to hire Bennett back! Have any of you checked with your board connections to see if a search committee has even been established? Answer: None! 22 months and counting...

He did nothing more than our current coach did as far as morality. Only problem I see is with him leaving and that would only happen if he were doing well so that would be a good thing. Just do a smart contract. He is vulnerable right now.

What I like best about him is that he is the epitome of the " I will beat yours with mine and then switch and I will beat mine with yours." Very good coach.

We currently have a coach, but when we don't... bring in Petrino.

all coaches are mercenaries. its what they do.

June figured out where he could get the most money for the least work. He is inherently lazy. Good football mind but that is about it. Loyal to his friends. Unfortunately his friends are all now 60.

give me a mercenary all day who is great at winning. Then you hire the loyal younger guy off his staff to continue the ride (see TCU). that guy feels loyal because you did something for him.

I think it is a name that should be in the hunt pending this next season. I expected us to struggle last season, but this season we have the depth to do much better. Theoretically, the last two recruiting classes weren't as good as the two before, so we have the next two seasons to turn a corner. I think there are enough folks rubbed the wrong way that if Jones fails to make a bowl game either of the next two seasons, he is out.

I kind of worry about Petrino, because if he had issues at Arkansas, what happens when he gets on our campus with much more attractive coeds?
