XTC, If it was so much easier why has it taken this long to get a player of Mudiay's caliber? If it was so much easier why have we been to the NCAA tournament in 20 years? You have a less amount of impact players in basketball with more schools going for them. Tap the brakes and let' wait to see how these players play together. Both are difficult but there are more good players and under the radar players to get in football. In basketball you have about 30 good player with 200+ schools going after them. Don't be spoiled by what LB has done. It monumental what he has done at SMU. It has never been done in any sport in the last 25 or 30 years. Let's get to the NCAA tournament first and stop putting the cart before the horse. I think we should temper expectations and not put pressure on theses kids and just let them gel together by playing. LB has had the greatest recruiting haul since Ron Meyer. Who knows, it may not be done again to this degree. With that being said I hope we contend within the next 3 years. I don't know if the metroplex has the #3 player in the country every year or even top 5 so getting players of similar stature would require going out of the area like Duke, Kansas, and Kentucky do. If we do that then we are really on our way. I think the best thing to do is wait and see how this team plays this year and that will be an indicator of the foundation for the future. Then we can make an educated conclusion based on the season being played and not on speculation. This coming year will be fun to watch imo. We have to establish some tradition in basketball before we can really go nationwide to get the top players. We can start that this year of we at least get to the NIT or CBI. I don't know if we will do that but if we do it will help. We have one more scholarship left in basketball this year and I don;t know what you are expecting LB to do with it but if he doesn't get a top 10 national player I am fine with it but it doesn't sound like you would be. Anyway BEAT TECH.

It is much easier to convince 1 player that with his commitment and 2-3 others it will turn around than telling 1 player that with 15-20 others it will get turned around. It is simply the nature of the beast. Football takes much longer to turn around. That said, Brown is doing amazing things and it would be nice to see better results from Jones on the recruiting trail.

Depends on who the one player is. Saban and Kelly turned around their program pretty quickly in football. So did James Franklin. Longer possibly yes but much longer no. In basketball only 2 people can be on the recruiting trail with the head coach in football you can have 6. I can't think of any non power 5 school that has done what LB has done ever in one year. I think we are witnessing history before our very eyes. After 6 year I think June has the players in place to make a run this year imo and he should expect to do so. But he has to have the staff to sustain that year in and year out. If LB does not get a top 10 player with the last scholarship would you be disappointed? Not trying to be combative just being curious. BEAT TECH.

Yes and no. Yes, because at this point I would like to think that Mudiay can talk one of his friends into coming with him. No, because we are SMU and have not been to the tournament since 1993. Rome was not built in one day. I am an eternal optimist so I like our chances, but will not consider it a failure either way.

Going to be tough because this year's class is not deep and I don't Tuner is to hot on us Mudiay or not. And Robinson had these tweets after Mudiay committed to SMU.

@ElbertRobinson8: Smu great pick my boi!!!!!

@ElbertRobinson8: I'm going to make my own legacy I'm not following anyone's foot steps!!!

June has brought in Traylon Shead and others who are good players. He just hasn't recruited as well as we would like, and he hasn't won a big game save for the victory over TCU in Ft. Worth a couple of years ago. He needs to knock of Tech and TCU this year to make a statement, and improve the recruiting. He needs to shock and awe as LB has done.

My own memory is that CJ more than ED was the magnet for the recruiting class of both were members. A Texas Football article had it that James was on the phone to Dickerson telling him to come to SMU and be a winner. Wagoner was also in that class and who knows what he might have done had he not been hurt. There was another notable RB who signed with SMU and eventually transferred to NTSU. I don't remember if he played much anywhere after HS. Meyer recruited very well that year and especially RBs. Another story I remember was that SMU was in the finals for Stanley Wilson, the LA Banning stud who played well at OU and in the pros until barred on account of drug use.

It is true that ED had the most noteworthy career in college and the pros, and nothing I am saying is an attempt to diminish that, but it was not an altogether predictable thing when he first suited up for the Mustangs.

I thought ED committed before CJ. In fact I thought CJ almost went to Alabama because ED can to SMU. At least that is what it looked like on Pony Excess to me.

ED related a story earlier this year about Michael Carter. He said CJ asked Carter why he chose SMU. Carter said '' so I don't have to chase you [CJ] for four years ''

As I recall it CJ called ED and told him to come to SMU with him and nobody would be able to beat us.

Outside of some extenuating circumstances, I believe this was the case. I think it was after he had been at SMU for a while he considered transferring.

I agree with the last two comments. I have not seen Pony Excess and xan't comment about the story line, but might still have the Texas Football I mentioned. IIRC the possibility of CJ transferring to Alabama was the subject of columns and/or news reports in the Dallas newspapers.

At one time CJ and ED might have been told they would split time at TB but ED eventually got more time at that position. CJ got about as much playing time but IIRC much of it was at WB or slot back, whatever the name for that position in the I.

Yes, they did cover SMU back then!

Craig James was the biggest, most important Pied Piper recruit in SMU History. He committed after MVP in Class 4A Championship-news media interviewed him in locker room after championship game and everything fell into place after that.

I've always thought that with the right coaching personnel we could be a contender for top tier football recruits. I originally thought JJ could do it, but he seems content to just slide by. He needs to find another Klemm who is an ace recruiter. Also what the hell is going on with Jason Phillips? I thought he was supposed to be some stud recruiter but I'm not seeing much fruition from that hire so far. We need young, dynamic coaches who are committing to bringing in legitimate talent and going up against Baylor, Tech, and TCU to get guys. We're probably not going to get guys away from Texas, OU, or A&M while we're in the American and that's just the hand we've been dealt, but we should at least be offering and making a legitimate push for top talent in the DFW area. What's the worst thing that can happen? That they say on? BFD, their loss. Basically we need the Ulric Maligi of football on our coaching staff.

Being in the middle of Dallas, we have a lot to sell potential recruits. I mean would you rather spend the next four years in Lubbock, Waco, or Dallas? THIS is what we need to be pitching these guys. Come to SMU, live in a major city with tons of entertainment options, get a great education (let's get that exercise science major up and running, please) and compete for conference titles and BCS appearances. We need to make it cool to go to SMU again. I like the Deion Sanders connection with his son, we need more of that. Get local celebs like Aikman, Dirk, or Jerry Jones on the sidelines for a game or doing the coin toss. We already did this with Dubya and I thought that was awesome.

Also, for the love of God, get some awesome uniforms, the ones we have now suck. We need some that stand out in a crowd. Honestly that blue mockup that someone on the board made is a major step in the right direction and 100x better than what we wore in 2012. Also wear a throwback for one game a year (Homecoming?) and get people like ED, Craig James, and others on campus for it. Imagine having recruits on campus for their official visit during Homecoming and Eric Dickerson is there to greet them on the sidelines and the Ponies are wearing some cool throwback uniforms. This stuff isn't hard, our athletic department is just so damn apathetic sometimes it's infuriating.

Schedule teams that people have heard of...hopefully we can keep TCU on the schedule past 2017, UNT needs to be our pushover but it's a good OOC game b/c it will draw well. Baylor is on there for awhile (starting in '14, I believe) and that's another good one. The fourth OOC game should be someone like Tech, Okie State, or an SEC team (Mizzou? Ole Miss?) nearby. If we could play a major opponent (ND? USC?) at Jerryworld or the Cotton Bowl during the State Fair that would be awesome too. Nobody is going to care if we beat Arkansas State or Louisiana Tech. Also, schedule Thursday night games on ESPN/ESPN2. Like that UofL topic talks about, that's how Louisville got so much exposure. Having a nationally televised game showing Ford Stadium, our beautiful campus, and the Dallas skyline is what we want. Also, teams are going to want to come here to play for recruiting purposes, and they'll think we're a pushover. Come on over is what I say to that.

Pretty damned good manifesto. Copy and paste it into an email to our esteemed AD as I think most here agree with just about everything you said.
