Like I have said a thousand times, my dad has been taking me to SMU games since '89. The only years that were any fun have been the 09-present. We also get a lot of national exposure compared to what we used to get. In the past everyone made comments to me that we looked like a high school team, whereas i Have had two people since tech say it looked like we have good athletes.

Also, put me in the camp that thinks SMU is a very hard school to recruit to. Do not give the the Larry Brown thing, basketball is different. Can't they go pro after a year? There is only a handful of guys on a team. One guy can make a bigger difference. We are in a good bball conference. Small schools all around the country get good bball recruits and can compete compared to football.

I ran into several SMU players (all current starters) at a restaurant recently. When I recognized them they were shocked and said nobody had ever recognized them. I said "ha sorry yall probably think I am creepy for recognizing yall" and they said "no man this is great, we didnt know anyone cared!"

Thats the state of our program, and how recruits see it. Don't say well if JJ would just win we would have people interested. I see more people interested than ever before as it is. It will take a long long time to get any interest. We have a student body that probably 40-50% are from areas where football doesn't matter. Another 25% are snobs and have no desire to go to a football game. But even our student section actually fills for half the game now.

Seems like JJ has had so many good players not make it in school such as Keivon Gamble. Seems June has not had the help from the administration he was promised, though I could be wrong.

I love watching this team play and look forward to every game. No, we have no chance to compete with the BCS teams, and we really are not in a BCS conference ourselves. I cant believe how well we hung with Tech, or beat TCU in 2010 given our limitations.

Don't be one of the losers in the stands hating on our players and coaches. I heard plenty of people on Friday that I immediately knew sucked at life when I heard them open their mouths after we had hung 3 quarters with Tech.

Gamble was admitted to SMU, played as a freshman and flunked out. TCU has a bunch more flunk outs than SMU over the last few years

Who is happy about a poll with little value other than to be critical of our team (and coach presumably)? With one game, you are dismissing the hard work of our students and belittling their coaches. This does get old. It is certainly not constructive. Why write off the season?

Boring.

Not better than embracing relevant football though, which we'll never have with your hero June Jones but hey let's keep him forever because we can't do any better right?

I don't think 6 or 7 regular season wins is writing off the season. I just want to know if you are satisfied with 6 or 7 wins and NEVER getting getting past that? Which means NEVER going to a BCS bowl.

So why haven't we been able to get basketball recruits before. We just out recruited Kentucky and Kansas for a recruit and you act like that was easier than anything June Jones has done. Obviously the hard core JJ supporters have formulated talking points and no matter what Larry Brown does it will be nothing compared to what June has done. I support SMU and if SMU needs a new coach then I support the move. I do not support the coach over the school like you evidently do. June has beaten mostly losing schools and is only like 5 of 20 against schools with winning records. Are we even thinking about going to a BCS bowl or are you of such mediocre mentality that 6 wins and a bowl game make you ecstatic?

This is driving me nuts. How can people not see that having LB here and playing high level BBall schools with 20+ nationally televised games a year is an easier sell to kids who are trying to go pro fast or at all and know that just a couple of great players make a great team?? What does fB have to sell? Good record of getting kids a shot at the pros, yes (but not nearly the opportunity the BBall program presents), a couple of nationally televised games a year playing mid level football schools in front of a small crowd of apathetic fans. Ask yourself if you would come here if you could go to an SEC or big 12 school, then please stop writing this nonsense.

My observations stands. And, how you automatically assume that unless we win it all this year, we will never go to a BCS Bowl? Factually incorrect, since a dominant, non-Power Conference program in 2014 and beyond will be included in the playoffs.

If TCU did it. We can too. Let's be positive. Plus we don't know how many games will be televised yet because a lot are TBD. If TCU can beat Oklahoma, Clemson, and Wisconsin etc without being in a BCS conference we can too. Let's start out by putting a whipping on Montana State.

Do you really think 6 or 7 wins will be enough to get to a BCS bowl as the dominant non-Power Conference program?

SMU doesn't have the passion to support its coaches and its team. LB just shakes his head in frustration. But, he has a very vocal and passionate team of big-time boosters that make it happen for him.

If you people knew the crap that went on between the football coaches and team leading up to the Tech game you would march on the President's office. Go find out. I cannot repeat the events that transpired but it would finally give some of you youngsters a window of why we don't succeed. Our AD did not stick behind his coaches or the players when he had the opportunities. The sad thing is, the coaching community is very close, eventually word will spread only raising the contempt for our university and making it even more difficult to attract assistants and head coaches.

As far as writing letters to our AD, it is a waste of time. He always has an excuse, but the truth is he has no power or authority. He is lost. I only hope he goes back to Tennessee before June does leave. He is incapable of rallying supporters and finding a strong replacement. After all, he was hired to just say "Yes, Sir".

I do not know what happened, but the post just helps prove that we are not a football program in a position to attract and keep a great coach and players. If June is fired for not producing, anyone looking at this job would see it as even more of a dead end job than before he was hired.

My only comment on the subject is that we need to be careful what we wish for. I was griping to one of the ESPN radio personalities on Sunday about the game and he replied something to the effect of "Just think of how far you've come. A Phil Bennett team would have lost that game by 40."

The fact that we were able to hang with (if not for the phantom holding penalty, you could even say "outplay") Texas Tech for almost 3 quarters is significant. The difference, of course being the top-to-bottom player quality and depth on the Tech roster.

Blaming the roster deficit on lackadaisical recruiting is oversimplifying the issue IMHO. I think it's safe to say we are now able to admit kids we couldn't have even sniffed at a few years ago. And if you look at the size and athleticism of our young players, the improvement is evident.

Not that I don't want to keep this rant going, it's good for business. So carry on.

Now how do we go about getting some of that top-to-bottom player quality and depth for ourselves? Perhaps another 6 classes of June's DITR recruiting is the answer.
