I'm more pleased with the situation after reading that than I was 24 hours ago. Also nice to see an AD that doesn't negotiate a contract handing a coach the keys to the University. Imagine that.

STLhockeyguy02, I'm guessing Hart did not have a lot of say in regards to the decision about JJ. He gave his input but in the end it's the CocC's decision. If the five million dollar number being mentioned was/is the buy out cost, I understand why the decision was made to offer the extension. That is a lot of money to come up with. As like you, I don't like it one bit but I don't write the checks.

Well, let's look at the numbers. 5 mill /20 = 250k. They are already committed to 100k so that makes and additional 150k/yr for one year ( which is tax deductible). Now, I suspect that a lot of us make at least 250k or more / yr. These guys are not like us- most of them are billionaires so the additional $$ is pretty insignificant. IMO this just shows the 'new' importance of building a winning program. Their commitment is now on the level of RGT's commitment to moving to the top level programs. Mediocrity is our motto. We need to change the name of our school to Simply Mediocre University.

IMO- 5-7 mill is pretty cheap considering the difference between falling to FCS and the possibility of moving up to BCS. Just IMO. I think that's aiming pretty high. I'd be shocked if we win more than 1. Who's going to stop the run? Who's going to catch anything outside of DJ and perhaps Taylor (since I doubt we throw much to Gaines)? Who's going to throw to them when Burcham goes down (you know we'll bring back the jog to the sideline on every play BS)? Who's going to do ANYTHING on special teams? And, here's the real kicker, who's going to slow the passing game when we graduated our best players who were ranked one hundred something in passing defense?

Football is going to SUCK next year and, perhaps, the next 2-3 years after. IF we get someone in here who recruits and can coach half a damn, we MIGHT get better before 2020.

Based on his commitment to basketball I believe Mr Miller would not walk away but basketball will always follow football as you well know. My concern is one program dragging down the other

Don't blame the COC at all for extending JJ to avoid the buyout. What's one year of mediocrity when the alternative is 2 years plus $ 5-6 million.
Sorry guys but if our conference paid the 8-10 million it was supposed to before it imploded then we might have had the funding for a buyout.

But it doesn't so we don't.

Now the prize is a P5 conference and the judgement is that there are no immediate moves on that front so SMU can afford to absorb the bad season and poor recruiting while saving resources to make a strong hire that will position us for a P5. That's the hope.

Don't blame SMU or the COC at all. Hey, JJ did get us out of the grave, it didn't work out as good as we hoped but we are no longer perceived as a doormat ( although from a talent standpoint we are).

Well we will all see this next year. Can June and his staff perform with the lackluster recruiting classes will be the key. It will also be easier in the public persona to fire him after 2 bad years with losing records...most media reporters just don't know about his poor recruiting and indifferent attitude towards the SMU community. Good tequila too expensive there?....A shame but it's becoming that way here too.....even some more $ then the good scotches.

Well, I was wrong when I disclosed that June was out at the end of the season. The same source has explained to me that the buy-out was $ 5 million for June and all of his assistants and the final decision was to punt for another year. The buy-out figures were based upon the remaining 18 months of his contract.

The good news is the contract allows SMU to walk away at the end of one more year without having to pay June anything. You can read between the lines as to why SMU negotiated this, and has said nothing further. Take this for what it is worth, although I am confident the information is accurate.
