What's a "former" Pony? That's a lifetime honor!

FWIW: I expect Burcham to start, but I bet they both play.

I think Burcham is better than some of the Haterazzi here wants to think...see the UCF game. With another offseason to learn and digest the offense, he could be a very good QB for us this year.

On the flipside, I could easily see a repeat of the 2011 A&M game where if Burcham struggles early in a hostile environment, the leash is short and Davis comes in earlier than expected

I doubt Davis sees any MEANINGFUL playtime for at least 4-6 weeks-he might get in during a blowout

If Burcham struggles out of the gate and June sees his $2M 2015 paycheck in jeopardy, I think we'll see Davis.

Wish he was more flexible, but it is what it is.

For a guy who knows QBs, he certainly runs thru a lot of em. Just think about the list starting with JWill. I guess he knows what he doesn't like.

Logic tells me that Burcham will start and we will use Davis near the goal line and on 3rd and short. Sounds like from reports his short passes are working and he certainly should provide a running threat. We'll see what JJ thinks.

It isn't or shouldn't be a trust or popularity vote for ANY position. It should be whomever gives the Mustangs the best chance to win plays. Not who is going to be able to play in the NFL or who is the highest-rated recruit or who your daddy is.

I'll go out on a limb and say that JJ has been hesitant to pull the trigger in the past on a change (Padron exception) because he hasn't had a large group of quality QBs to choose from.

There are 5 legit QBs on campus for the first time under Jones. If Burcham (or anyone else) doesn't show that they can play well when the lights are on, I bet he switches them out pretty quickly until he finds someone who can play well when the game is on the line.

In fact, I think that goes for every position out there. His comments about improved size, athleticism and depth I think are going to lead to some younger players playing, and if they experience the fog of war, a different young player is going to get a shot.

Corner is not deep because of JR, but he has 4 safeties. One ILB is Yenga, for the other you have Rice, JUCO, Horton, and Jackson. One OLB is Sanders, and for the other you have Barnes, Seals, Longoria. DL is 3 deep. OL our tackles are probably set, but inside we have several players to rotate through Guard and Center if people don't play well. Outside reciever, DT is one and then Gaines, Dickerson are at the other. Inside is DJ and then Lancaster, Deion, Halverson. RB is 6 deep. QB is 5.

If we come out and struggle against Baylor, I bet you see a pretty heavy rotation early on, and that will keep going through the UNT game.

If Matt Davis isn't starting or taking over in the opener, he will emerge as the starter sometime in September. I just don't think Burcham has "it" to be a capable D1 quarterback.

I disagree with your statement about Burcham. I also cannot begin to believe Jones will switch out a QB for anything other than injury until I actually see him do it. He did with Padron but that was a war of egos more than poor play. I would love to see him swap out for the best at the job but I just do not think he will do it.

I agree with Mrydel. JJ has never shown a tendency to experiment or try new ideas.

June does seem to like sticking to one QB for season, but he also likes building up a transfer. One interesting development was June saying they were going to refocus on the deep threat. Burcham has been described as "more of a drop-back passer similar to Gilbert", while Davis "could create significant change at SMU as a dual-threat quarterback." Colbert the newest 3* QB to SMU is also a dual threat QB.

Not sure why you bring in a JUCO Dual threat QB unless you want to change things up. Burcham and Cassel (and the others) fit his current game plan. Optimistically, Davis comes in on some early red zone plays, and gets more play time in the second half. Pessimistically, June does what he did to the last dual threat QB and turns him into a WR, burns plenty of red shirts, and just cashes his check for one last season.

From everything I've seen it looks like burch am is the guy. It will be tough to bench him after Baylor, because they look legit, and if Burcham plays somewhat okay he's starting going into game two.

I think SMU can beat UNT, but if they don't and he plays poorly, you could see Davis against the Aggies. I mean I'm sure some people would prefer one over the other, as a new fan, I hope whoever starts game 1 is successful all the way through.

I don't think you can judge Burcham from anything, good or bad, based on what he did in those games last year when forced into a tough situation. Clearly he has some talent from his Elite 11 Co-MVP with Winston.
