Any idea why they round heights down?

Agreed- Hyder could be a beast 3-4 Nose. Since we only signed one DL last year (Epley) I wonder if Hyder and someone else (Pursley? Some schools wanted him as a DE out of HS) could move from OL to DL in this class. The young interior OL may be a little crowded with Evan Brown, Barns supposedly playing well at center, and Marvis Brown coming in next year.

Good to hear.

footballdad wrote:Bo actually getting first team reps at right tackle and holding his own. Would be an amazing feat if this kid who has never really played football could actually get on the field this year.

Amazing, or a damning indictment of our OL?

I can't get over Fister being 259- you're coming off a redshirt year with two guard spots open for the taking and you show up under 260 pounds. Tells me he doesn't want it, and makes me wonder about the culture that allowed that to happen in the first place.

Also I heard Hollie is lazy and was in the doghouse with the coaches this summer so we probably shouldn't get our hopes up there

No Everett Dickerson on this roster?
First I've heard of that.

Hyder is working at center, and it's hard to imagine Pursley moving anywhere, since he added a bunch of weight and already has caught the attention of June Jones, who listed Pursley among the names of those freshmen who might compete for playing time.

Tuiasosopo is 258? Seems doubtful. Can't say exactly — I haven't asked him — but DC Tom Mason said last week that Tui has lost a lot of weight, and is down to 230-something. For what it's worth, he looks visibly faster than he did in the spring.

Interesting idea about Wright being light. He seems willing to throw his head in there and tie up blockers, and Mason has said since he got to SMU that he would rather have quick linemen than big linemen any day … and for an interior lineman, Wright is pretty quick.

lots of guys shrunk in terms of height from last years roster...Myles Crosby, Shaq Randolph, Mason Gentry, Holloway, Longoria...guess that is the rounding down you mentioned.

I have really never seen a D1 program have so many offensive lineman under 260 lbs...even under 280 lbs! Sure, every now and again you have that 245 lb project who has the frame to hold 295, but this is unreal.

Ponypride, if you think Pursley can see the field at 250-260 lbs...I don't know what to say..Pursley and Tony Richards have to redshirt.

McCarty is listed at a ligher weight than last year as well...

In one of the post practice interviews JJ says how disappointed he is that Beau dropped so much weight to play OLB, they wanted him around 250 and he came in at basically 230. We will see how this position move works, but at either position I bet he isn't going to have as good of a season after dropping so much weight.

Mason mentioned Beaus weight in his interview ... he stated he wanted him to focus on weight gain during camp. That is a tall order, usually weight goes the other way in camp. I'm sure the coaches had in in mind a bookend to SS. I would hate to lose out on Beau this year ... "Tweener" on lite side now for DE and still learning OLB. Really, at OLB and his height/weight is lite, hopefully he was able maintain most of his strength. Should be quicker though.

What is going on with our Weight and Conditioning program? Sounds like 10 guys are starving like Shabazz Napier and had their stipend meal money stolen by Hollie and Seana

It is garbage and most of the players think the trio that runs it are incompetent. As far as all of the weight loss, that is the direct result of our lack of a training table for these guys. The only time these guys are fed right and really monitored is during this current 3 weeks of camp. The rest of the year they are basically on their own.

Goes back to the 'haves' and 'have nots'. Nearly all of the P5 schools today have a dedicated training table for their football teams and they closely monitor this stuff. Nutritionists are a common and integral part of the staff at these bigger schools. Not saying we can or cannot afford it, just saying it's pretty important when you're trying to compete with the biggest/fastest/strongest.

A small minority of these 18-21 year olds will be dedicated enough to do it on their own, but the great majority need to have a very strict and regimented program to stay on task and achieve significant gains in 'good' weight, strength, and speed.

Sure, Seana put on 70 lbs last year, but he did it by gorging himself on pizza and burgers and soda and other crap in the SMU cafeterias. (Not your fault Jerry, love you man!)

Footballdad, Not saying you are wrong because I can't speak to the current program or the directors but when Coach Jost was running the program in the mid 90's I can say that there was not a time during the school year or summer that the "traning table" was closed for more than 1-2 weeks (May when people went home and Christmas time because we never went to bowls perhaps, but not beyond that). you had some kids that didn't dedicate themselves and follow the program, but I find it hard to believe we don't have resources set aside for an open "training table" right now. Does it compete with Florida State and Alabama, likely not, but its like when people throw mud at various lower tier colleges - alot of times the quality of the degree or in this case the off season training is what the students or kids puts into it, because the teachers or trainers there do care and are reasonably good at what they do. Gotta believe some of these kids that are getting too big or not big enough are just not doing everything they are told to a certain extent.

The June apologist rant ends...

We've never had this big a problem. The big weight gains have always been prior to reporting for their freshman year-I really think a lot of recruits think they've got to be 330-340 to play. We've had 8-10 OLM like that over the years. See Briggs. Those guys never see the field-they redshirt themselves coming in like that. Once they get on campus we've done a great job getting the OLM down to 300-310 range where SMU coaches want them. June Jones doesn't play fatties. We've also never had this many OLM below 270 where they are not likely to ever see the field. A lot of guys have put on good weight in redshirt years. See Beachum. I also think that excuse doesn't fly with the evidence. In the past I actually think they've done a decent job in this area. Freshman are one thing-but upperclassmen who come in not in the weight/strength range to play the positions coaches want them to-is a big red flag.

Player red flag? Or coaching apathy red flag? Outside of this pre-season camp, these kids are on their own, with little supervision or accountablility outside of practice.

The case could certainly be made that this is the way to go, and these kids need to mature and grow and be responsible for their own actions. Some kids love it because it's very laid back and they do what they want.

The flip side is a much more disciplined, focused, team-first environment with much more accountability and direction when it comes to the weight room, nutrition, team activities, etc.

In the bigger picture I'm not sure the current SMU culture is conducive to winning

Shouldn't this fall on the strength and conditioning coach?
