watching West Virginia playing Bama tough reminds me that at least one of the P5 conference champions is going to be left out of the playoffs and that's going to create a major controversy. I really do think we could be headed for an 8 team playoff or a structure that looks like the "Super Conferences" that were discussed over 20 years ago. I could see 4 conferences of 16-18 members where essentially the 8 division winners constitute the playoff contenders with conference championship games being the 1st round.

I think we'll see an 8-team playoff in the not-so-distant future. Isn't the current playoff structure through 2026-27, though? Could it be modified before then?

All it takes is for the Big XII to disband and those schools to merge into PAC 12 (we know they want UT, TT, OU & OSU) and the 8 team playoff is essentially in place. Seriously...which of the P5 conferences is going to acknowledge their champion doesn't deserve a shot at the title?
