You are letting him off too easy to say it is lack of effort. There are a lot of other problems that cannot be fixed by just trying harder.

See Hawaii Bowls. I know the opponents were under-motivated but if we'd played like that every game, we'd have a conference championship or two and would've picked off Tech and maybe TCU a few more times in that span. He (or someone on staff) can get a team ready. That's what is really frustrating.

Getting a team ready for one game is a lot different than running a program, and the difference is not just effort. You have to know how to hire the right staff, organize the recruiting effort, modernize your offense, engage with fans, etc. To say it is all lack of effort implies he both knows how to do all of those things and has the ability to do them, just does not have the energy to do them. I think he could try as hard as he could and still not do much better because there is no evidence he knows what needs to be done or has the ability to do it.

Tom Rossley's teams played hard. His 15-43-3 record will not put him in anyone's hall of fame, but I liked him as a coach and he is a good guy as well.

A tip of the hat to Mick Rossley as well.

Rossley ran the RnS when it was actually sort of a helpful offense in leveling the playing field. We still sucked, but we played a MUCH tougher schedule and didn't back down and the offense COULD get entertaining (Ramon).

Yep, his win loss record did not begin to tell the story. Some great performances vs very good competition. I really miss that.

That last second throw from Flanigan to Brian Berry against New Mexico was a classic.

We also had very narrow losses to UNC and UCLA along with our tie with the aggies in 1994.

Solid game against Wisconsin at Ford in a Rose Bowl season for the Badgers I think. Used to love seeing the visiting team having to walk down Airline before & after games to get to a real locker room.

The interesting thing about Rossley (v June Jones) is Rossley's ability to adapt to changes in the game. Coming back from the DP, we ran the RnS to compensate for a lack of talent. As the game changed and Rossley changed jobs, he always seemed to be running a "modern" offense that fit the current game.

Watching the RnS now, I think that we might as well run the Wishbone.

Flannigan's last second pass to Brian Berry to beat New Mexico was still at Ownby. I remember because somewhere there is a University commercial or something that played that pass over and over. Unfortunately, that was the only win of the season. Great Trivia question-so the only game we won we didn't have the lead until after the clock had expired. We did tie No. 6 Texas A&M though

Taking a 1-11, followed by another 1-11 team to 8-5 is evidence :!:
