Not a rivalry.

Re: UNT is SMU's RIVAL.....Funny...SMU fans think UNT is NOT their rival, and beneath them, while claiming TCU is.
TCU fans think SMU is NOT their rival and beneath them. I think TCU is our rival ![]() Dallas Mavericks - 2011 NBA CHAMPIONS!
Long live the Circle of Champions!
Re: UNT is SMU's RIVAL.....I would venture to guess that 95 percent of SMU students do not even bother applying to UNT or know where UNT is located. The only "rivalry" between the two schools exists because of proximity. The student profile of the two schools could not be more different.
Back off Warchild seriously.
Re: UNT is SMU's RIVAL.....
I was born and raised in Dallas and didn't know what UNT was until high school. I'm not afraid to admit that. I have known 1 person that went there my entire life (and that's when I found out what it was).
Re: UNT is SMU's RIVAL.....The funny thing is tcu probably feels the same way towards smu that we do towards UNT. Only difference is we are way closer to UNT than tcu...
Re: UNT is SMU's RIVAL.....We have no business playing them, does us no good. I am sure TCU is saying the same thing. We arent playing them in hoops this year. I am sure fball isnt far from being dropped.

Re: UNT is SMU's RIVAL.....
since this is a football board, this is true. In terms of anything else, we are several notches above unt and notches above tcu.
Re: UNT is SMU's RIVAL.....SMU and TCU have a fairly similar student body - although it is much harder to get into SMU. UNT is for the bottom one third of the students who go to not very good high schools in the DFW area. They draw no further than that unless you are in their music school. We draw top students from around the country. They draw bad students from around DFW.
Football might be pretty close in skill level right now, but big rivalries require some commonality in the student bodies - there is absolutely no cross over between our schools.
Re: UNT is SMU's RIVAL.....This is the best part:
"We were never good enough to play in their conference. Their radio broadcast kicked our radio broadcast off The Ticket." Bahahahahahahahaha! They're not our rival as a school, but let's be honest, there's a very real chance this game could be closer than we want to see, and might even go the wrong way. We always get better as the season goes along. Hopefully that starts Saturday.
Re: UNT is SMU's RIVAL.....My SMU-UNT story:
My family had some familiarity with UNT before I came to SMU through the Great American Shootout, an AAU basketball tournament that used to be hosted at UNT every summer until the NCAA changed the rules (it is now hosted at the Bob Knight field house in Duncanville along with some area high schools). We spent 4-5 days in Denton every summer from 2001-2004 and I played in and attended numerous games at the Super Pit and the UNT rec center. After the 2002 tournament (when I was entering my senior year of HS) we drove to Dallas and I visited the SMU campus for the first time. I went to the game in 2006 at Fouts and was on the phone with my parents the next day when my mom asked how the SMU football season was going. I told her how we were off to a poor start having just lost to UNT in Denton. Her response: "You lost to that school?" Bottom line - any unbiased outside observer would look at both schools and conclude that SMU has superior resources, facilities, and prestige, all of which should translate to a W in any athletic event. If I learned anything from the game at Fouts in 2006 - one that you could argue cost us a bowl appearance that year - it's that UNT's players, coaches, and fans view this as a rivalry game whether we do or not.
Re: UNT is SMU's RIVAL.....Never met a single student that applied to both while I was an in school. Academically they are night and day apart. Half of SMU's student body is from out of the state, so they definitely don't know UNT. It is hard enough to get people excited for the Houston game. A good amount of out of state students are aware of TCU and most get into the SMU-TCU rivalry. UNT always talks up its jazz band (which I have never seen ranked), but what do the other 28,000 students do there? I get the bitterness to SMU in the "haves and have not theme", but a rival they are not, not even a safety school.
Sadly in year 7 of June, they are starting to look like a football peer.
Re: UNT is SMU's RIVAL.....
We do not have a similar student body to tcu. Just so you have an idea, in terms of sat scores, our 25th percentile is the 50th percentile at tcu. you keep moving that, our top 25th percentile wouldn't even go to tcu. that is one metric. for rice, our 75th percentile is slighly higher to their 25th percentile. there are differenecs and we can't compare to rice, but neither can tcu to us. God, I just read through that and it felt a lot like when I walk through the party pass area at Jerry World to my actual seats. I'm going to run a virus scan now just to be on the safe side. 2005 PonyFans.com Rookie of the Year Award Recipient
