Re: Houston Nutt
Re: Houston NuttWhen Jevan Snead which Coach O recruited and all of Coach O's players graduated at Ole Miss the team went down hill fast. He was never able to really develop QB's and the play calling was bad. Nutt would be a serious mistake.

Re: Houston Nutt
Amen to that ! I had dealings with his brother Dennis when he was head BB coach at Texas St. All three brothers are cut from the same cloth......."snakes in the grass" !!
Re: Houston NuttYes, exactly what we need for recruiting. A good snake oil salesman. This is what I have been saying. I thought we wanted recruiting.

Snakes are in there somewhere. #HammerDown
Re: Houston NuttHe had a very good coaching record, especially against excellent competition. His big problem was that Arky and Ole Miss fans thought rebuilding should only take a 1/2 to full season.
As far as other issues mentioned above, what coach has not had some issues? and SMU by the fact that we are SMU attracts a better student and has a very solid culture as it relates to the football players. I can see that carrying over with whoever takes over. If we go with established coach, with skins on the wall, we could do a lot worse IMO. Look, if you want a choir boy, we just let one walk. Re: Houston NuttWatch Houston Nutt on CBS Sports Network. he comes across as having been aptly named.
Re: Houston Nuttwe could/have done worse than Houston Nutt in the past 20 years. I would listen and call, but set the bar a bit higher...kinda like having TT as your fall-back school.
For that matter, as has been mentioned in another thread, I would hope there is contact with Larry Coker of UTSA...he too is old as Moses' toes, but has done well at building that program, and has skins on the wall too stable-boy for the four horsemen of the apocalypse
Re: Houston Nutt
We could also do a lot better. Phil Fulmer is an outlaw too (google Fulmer Cup) and unlike Nutt he actually won the SEC and a NC. They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

Re: Houston Nutt
Fact is, he's not even that great of a recruiter. At Ole Miss, he didn't win a single recruiting battle against Alabama or LSU. Not one. He did sign some guys that turned out to be great players... after he left. Most of his 4 and 5 star players were low character guys or academic risks. In fact, many of his top recruits never even made it to campus. Looking at Ole Miss' 2009 recruiting class (first full recruiting class at Ole Miss)... 4 4 star players and 1 5 star. 25 3 stars. FYI, this was the class that lead to the SEC's "Houston Nutt" rule. Problem is, the 1 5 star never panned out and was a 2 pack a day smoker... left the team after his freshman season and 3 of the 4 stars left within 2 years or never made it at all. Of the 25 3 stars about 9 never made it to campus or left within a year... but, hey, the class was ranked #17 in the nation. That's Houston Nutt's great recruiting. Just to compare, the same school signed 9 4 star or better players this past signing day. Every one made it to campus. The year before, Ole Miss signed 12 4 star or better (4 were 5 star) players and all but 1 are still on the team (Austin Golson turned out to be a slime ball and transferred to Auburn despite being slated to be the starting right guard this year) and all are getting playing time (2 of them were 4 star quarterbacks who are splitting backup snaps but both played against Vanderbilt). Translation? Houston Nutt's recruiting wasn't all that great.
Re: Houston Nuttwe could do worse. and have. at least he would give a crap. that would be a step up.
remember, no one wanted LB supposedly... Derail the Frogs!
Re: Houston NuttRebStang, I guess there is validity in that, but to a thirsty man in the recruiting desert that has been SMU the past few years, that sounds like a bonanza of talent. Heck, there was a degree of celebration at 3* guys here recently.
Don't suppose Ole Miss would trade us their current head coach for a player or two to be named later, you suppose? He at least is working to get the talent there, now the question is can he coach them up? stable-boy for the four horsemen of the apocalypse
Re: Houston NuttSo you judge him as a bad recruiter because he did not out recruit 2 of the top 5 recruiting schools in the country?
Look, I am not pushing for Nutt. I have been knowledgeable about him since he was in high school so I think I know a little about him. He is sleazy and you kind of want to wash your hands after meeting him. But he can recruit and he can coach. I posted within 10 minutes of June quitting that I was certain Nutt's resume was on Hart's desk and I will still say that is true. He wants work and he loves Dallas. He lives in Dallas. He will be in the mix. I would not be upset if he were hired, but I do not think we will go that route. It would be out of step for SMU. All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand
