Re: The return of the pistol?ANYTHING better than June's R&S. Have we not learned anything by watching the first 2 games? His offense will not work with our current personnel, period.
Hopefully Mason puts his stamp on this thing from day one. In addition to his personal preference for the pistol, our inability to execute the R&S this year makes his defense look bad. Constantly on the field and in poor field position. I would be very surprised if we don't see major changes. What does he have to lose?
Re: The return of the pistol?Just do a spread. Or run the ball the whole game and end the debacles early.

This was at Nevada Mason said he’d stick with the Pistol offense, saying Chris Ault was “ahead of his time†with the offense and that it would be crazy to throw away Nevada’s offensive identity. Mason also said his family was thinking about retiring in Reno and that he wouldn’t use Nevada as a steppingstone to another job.
Re: The return of the pistol?
How would installing the pistol work with leveraging our small WRs to block on the outside? Just saying nothing is really going to be perfect with our personnel. I would love it if we tried to change something up because the first two games have been miserable. I just don't expect it because of the background of the offensive coaches.
Re: The return of the pistol?
The background of the offensive coaches is absolutely the biggest concern but hopefully Mason uses his newly acquired power to override these guys a little bit. I'd give it a 50/50 chance of happening, not holding my breathe. We need to de-leverage these tiny receivers actually!!! Move Gaines inside to TE/H-back, get another RB on the field and eliminate 1 or 2 of the mighty mouses. Heck, if you need blocking outside get Hipps on the field. Just seems to me our backfield could actually be decent with Pope, Line, Gresham, Nlemchi, Davis, Gaines to choose from? Can the O-Line run block a more traditional scheme is the other million dollar question?
Re: The return of the pistol?I'm with you. Holloway was spending some time at TE as well, don't know if that was working out, but him and Gaines in a double TE set with Pope in the backfield would be a nice power look. Hipps can back them up.
What I don't know is if we have anyone left to play outside receiver who can block out wide and has the strength to get off the line when they jam. And Gaines has slimmed down to play outside receiver, He and Hipps are big enough to block inside in a spread because you are taking on an LB in space. I don't think they are big enough to line up next to the OL and block against a DE. or an LB strength on strength.
Re: The return of the pistol?I remember my high school coach went to a coaching seminar led by Bill Yeoman. Afterward, he approach Coach Yeoman and asked him about how his triple option offense worked. Yeoman gave him a playbook and they split a bottle of scotch and lo and behold, this small prep school outside of Washington, DC, unveiled the triple option. Our QB averaged 8 ypc and our running back 10 ypc. We led the DC area in total offense beat the Maryland state public school champion by 40 and lost to the #1 team in the DC area by 10. A good coach and a bottle of scotch and you can run pretty much any offense. That has been my pet peeve with all of our coaches. They want to force our personnel into their offense, instead of figuring out an offense for the players you have.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
Re: The return of the pistol?
How much time passed between the bottle of scotch and the first game. I am going to guess more than two weeks.
Re: The return of the pistol?Haven't we been running a spread for at least the past two games ? With a combined score of 88 - 6, I'd say we've been spreading them !

Re: The return of the pistol?
This.
Re: The return of the pistol?
Options: Davis - transfer who doesn't really the RnS Cassell - RS freshman who seems to know most of the RnS Two true freshman QBs - don't know squat Kritsch - can't play While they might not go to a Pistol, they would be smart to switch to more of a spread to simplify things for everyone. If Davis can play (injured v UNT), look for read option plays. Do unto others before they do unto you!!
Re: The return of the pistol?I don't care what you want to call it...I just want to see more balance between RUN and shoot and it sure would be nice to use the middle of the field a little more often
Re: The return of the pistol?
^This. I doubt that we are going to see the coaching staff reinvent the wheel. Im not an expert but imagine that the playbook will be simplified and a little more vanilla. Just try to see what works against a&m and hopefully one of the qb's finds a little rhythm. The staff just need to instill some confidence in that offense and hopefully put up a couple quality drives next saturday to build on. SMU Class of 2014
